- The History of the Christian Music Charts
Now you're probably wondering, "How are the songs charted and made?" "What makes them different from songs that chart on the Billboard Hot 100?" "Where did you get your chart information?" This article is about the history of the Christian music charts. According to author Jeffrey Lee Brothers in his book Hot Hits: AC Charts 1978 – 2001, "When CCM Magazine published music charts, it received data from a specific number of radio stations regarding the number of times a song was played. This airplay data was then assigned points and weights based on the cumulative number of plays per song. The result was a weekly chart that ranked the most played, and presumably, most popular songs. The AC (Adult contemporary) charts have long covered the most radio stations in the Christian music industry. The charts themselves have gone through several changes over the years. When CCM first published its radio hits charts, AC was not a recognized format. What is today considered adult contemporary was then covered under the title of contemporary hits. On September 30, 1981 CCM published its first AC chart, but only for a year. CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio) and AC merged again on October 6, 1982 until CCM split them again on May 6, 1985 to reflect the current formats." So now here is the history of how the Christian music charts were made, once again from author Jeffrey Lee Brothers' Hot Hits: AC Charts 1978 – 2001 : From July 1978 to September 1986, charts were derived essentially the same way, however, they were published monthly. In 1983, MusicLine was launched publishing their charts monthly. On September 30, 1986 MusicLine charts became bi-weekly and was renamed The MusicLine Update . It published Christian Album charts as well as four radio charts: CHR (Christian Hit Radio)/Pop, AC (Adult Contemporary), Inspirational/Praise and Rock. While the magazine focused on the contemporary Christian music industry-related content that was previously included in CCM Magazine, CCM Magazine retained the consumer-related content. In 1988, The MusicLine Update was renamed The CCM Update. On June 15, 1992, The CCM Update began publishing their charts weekly. In 1999, Salem Media Group acquires CCM Magazine and then on April 15, 2002, Salem closed The CCM Update . At that point, CCM turned over its data and charts to Radio & Records , which continued to publish weekly charts until July 2006. Billboard magazine has since 2003 taken over the Christian charts with their Hot Christian Songs, Christian Airplay and Christian AC Airplay. Billboard , at the time, focused only on Christian album sales in the 1980s and 1990s with the Top Christian Albums chart. They did not have a music songs chart for Christian music during those periods until 2003. Radio and Records is also a trade publication magazine like Billboard , except they cover radio airplay charts. In April 2002, The CCM Update was covering the Christian music radio charts by way of Radio & Records ( R&R ) as well as Christian music industry news up until 2008. Before R&R folded for good a couple of years later, they still continued publishing the Christian music charts but without The CCM Update attachment. Billboard magazine still continues to publish their Christian music charts to this day. These are the books I use for chart information when I do articles on the Christian artists you see: Jeffrey Lee Brothers has published two books from CCM Magazine : Hot Hits: Christian Hit Radio : 20 Years of Charts, Artist Bios, and More is a good reference book but it is hard to find. I was one of the fortunate ones to get this book by mail. The book covers 20 years from 1978 to 1997 of Contemporary (or Christian) Hit Radio, which is Christian music's version of Top 40 radio. The other book is called Hot Hits: Adult Contemporary Charts 1978 -2001 . This is more or less the same book as the Christian Hit Radio book, except it covers the AC charts from 1978 to 2001 and is more extensive. This book is available at Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Hot-Hits-AC-Charts-1978-2001/dp/1410732940/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 Now this book is pretty much an extension of Hot Hits: Christian Hit Radio called Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music by Mark Allan Powell. Like the Hot Hits books, it covers the CHR years from 1978 to 2001, more than 1,000 pages so it's a big book and is available at Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-Contemporary-Christian-Recent-Releases/dp/1565636791?ref_=ast_author_dp For music chart information to cover the early 2000s, I go to a website called World Radio History where they have back issues of music trade magazines of Billboard and Radio & Records (R &R ) in pdf format. You can check it out here .

The album topped the Billboard Top Gospel Albums and peaked at number 3 on the Top Christian Albums charts. - Let Them Fall in Love (2017)
Let Them Fall in Love is the ninth studio album by Christian gospel singer CeCe Winans , released on February 3, 2017 by PureSpring Gospel with a new marketing and distribution agreement with Thirty Tigers. The album is produced by CeCe's son Alvin Love III and musician Tommy Sims. It is CeCe's first album of new material in nearly a decade since 2008's Thy Kingdom Come , and the first time Let Them Fall in Love is released independently. The album's sound is a throwback of sorts paying tribute to 1960s and 1970s R&B soul. The album was preceded by the singles "Never Have to be Alone" and "Hey Devil!" featuring the American gospel vocal group The Clark Sisters. Both singles were released in the fall of 2016. CeCe covers the 1973 Kris Kristofferson country gospel classic "Why Me" (#1 Billboard Hot Country Singles, #16 Billboard Hot 100, #28 Billboard AC). Hezekiah Walker and The Love Fellowship Choir are the featured vocalists on the track "Dancing in the Spirit." Let Them Fall in Love topped the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart. The album also placed in the Independent Albums chart debuting and peaking at number 6 and at number 103 on the Top 200 Albums chart. In the fall of 2017, CeCe won two Dove Awards for Gospel Artist of the Year and Contemporary Gospel/Urban Album of the Year at the 48th GMA Dove Awards and in 2018 has won two Grammy Awards for Best Gospel Album and Best Gospel Performance/Song for the single "Never Have to be Alone" at the 53rd Grammy Awards. Something's Happening! A Christmas Album is the tenth studio and second Christmas album by Christian gospel singer CeCe Winans , released on October 19, 2018 by PureSpring Gospel and originally distributed by Thirty Tigers. The album is a departure from early Christmas albums First Christmas (with CeCe's brother BeBe Winans) (1993) and His Gift (1998), whereas those albums were more urban contemporary and this album is with a full symphony orchestra. It was an album, CeCe said, that she has always wanted to do to capture the Christmas spirit with a full orchestra. CeCe's son Alvin Love III produced and arranged Something's Happening! and has written five original songs including the single and music video "It's Christmas." Something's Happening! peaked at number 12 on the Top Gospel Albums and number 42 on the Top Holiday Albums charts in Billboard magazine. The reissue peaked at number 12 on the Top Gospel Albums and number 50 on the Top Holiday Albums charts in Billboard magazine. Legacy...Hymns and Faith is the fourteenth studio album by Christian singer-songwriter Amy Grant , released on May 21, 2002 by Word Records and A&M Records. It was her first overtly religious album since 1988's Lead Me On and consists primarily of well-known hymns with a few original songs. Early pressings of the CD are in "double disc" format containing the album and a bonus DVD with a behind the scenes documentary in the studio recording the album. Grant released a follow-up to this album, Rock of Ages...Hymns and Faith in 2005. Grant reunited with her long-time producer Brown Bannister (his first production appearance since 1992's Home for Christmas ). The album is co-produced by country music singer Vince Gill (Grant's second husband since 2000). The album's highlight includes a new arrangement of MercyMe's 2001 hit "I Can Only Imagine" retitled "Imagine" coupled with the hymn "Sing the Wondrous Love of Jesus." Legacy... topped the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart and peaked at number 21 on the Top 200 Albums chart and was Gold certified in 2007. - Behind the Eyes (1997)
Behind the Eyes is the twelfth studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Amy Grant, released on September 9, 1997 by Myrrh/Word Records and A&M Records. The album was produced by Keith Thomas and Wayne Kirkpatrick. Issued near the end of Grant's marriage to Christian singer - songwriter Gary Chapman , many of the songs on Behind the Eyes reflect Grant's struggles in her marriage and all relate to a theme of optimism. The album peaked at number 2 on the Top Christian Albums and number 8 on the Top 200 Albums charts in Billboard magazine. And on the Top 200 Albums, it was Grant's highest-placed non-Christmas album, compared to 1991's Heart in Motion (No. 10) and 2013's How Mercy Looks From Here (No. 12). The album was listed at number 44 in the 2001 book The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music by CCM Magazine. The first single and music video "Takes a Little Time" was a Top 5 hit on the Billboard AC chart and climbed to the Top 40 on both the Hot 100 Airplay and Adult Top 40 charts. The song was released as a CD Maxi-Single but only to the Christian retail market, thus the reason why it was not commercially released to the mainstream market and not qualified on the Hot 100 chart at the time. The maxi-single contains two Behind the Eyes tracks "Takes a Little Time" and "Somewhere Down the Road" and a new recording of her Age to Age track "El Shaddai." The album is more acoustic-driven, leaving behind the polished pop productions of her two previous 90s albums Heart in Motion and House of Love . The album was certified Gold by the RIAA ( Recording Industry Association of America ) for half a million copies sold in the United States and in 1998 Grant won a Dove Award for Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year for Behind the Eyes . In 2007, the album was digitally remastered and reissued by Sparrow Records/EMI-Christian Music Group. Track listing 1. Nobody Home (Glen Ballard, Siedah Garrett) -3:37 2. - House of Love (1994)
House of Love is the eleventh studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Amy Grant , released on August 23, 1994 by Myrrh/Word Records and A&M Records. The album was produced by Michael Omartian and Keith Thomas. The album is the follow-up to her quintuple-platinum 1991 release Heart in Motion . Although House of Love sold less than half of what its predecessor sold, it similarly combines pop music with Christian values. The album's lead single "Lucky One" was the album's biggest hit at number 18 on the Hot 100 and number 2 on the AC charts in Billboard magazine, followed by the title song with guest vocals by country music singer (and future second husband Vince Gill) and a remake of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi." "Say You'll Be Mine" was a U.K. Top 50 hit. When it was released in 1994, House of Love was the biggest initial release in Christian music history, shipping almost half a million copies on its first day alone. In the Christian radio market, songs like "Children of the World" and "Helping Hand" were number one hits. Some of the album's other tracks garnered more notice later on when covered by other artists. "Oh How The Years Go By" would later be covered by R&B singer-actress Vanessa Williams in 1997 and be a Top 10 Billboard AC hit and the track "The Power" would be covered by American singer-actress Cher on her 1998 album Believe . House of Love topped the Top Christian Albums and debuted and peaked at number 13 on the Top 200 Albums charts in Billboard magazine. At the 1995 Dove Awards, Grant was nominated in six categories including Artist of the Year, Female Vocalist, Pop/Contemporary Album and Song of the Year for "Children of the World," which she co-wrote with Wayne Kirkpatrick and Tommy Sims, but losing in all categories. On September 27, 2024, Grant reissued House of Love on Amy Grant Productions/Capitol Christian Music Group as an expanded anniversary edition on two vinyls and on two CDs with a 12-page booklet with lyrics and photos inside. Disc 1 of the CD version features the original remastered 11-song album, plus two producer versions of the title track from Omartian and "Oh How the Years Go By" from Thomas. Disc 2 contains "Politics of Kissing" that was only available in the European and Asian versions of the album and "Life's Gonna Change" that was a B-side of "Say You'll Be Mine" when that single was released only in the U.K. market. Also included are six remixes of "Lucky One," two remixes of the title song, both featuring Gill, plus more remixes, rare intros of two tracks and 2024 versions of "Helping Hand" and "The Power."
