Michael W. Smith Project (sometimes known as Project) is the debut studio album by Christian recording artist - songwriter Michael W. Smith. Originally released in 1983 on Reunion Records, it was re-issued on CD in 1987 with an updated photo of Smith.
The album peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. Michael W. Smith Project is listed at number 34 in the 2001 book 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music and his signature song "Friends" (with guest vocals by Amy Grant) is listed at number 3 in the 2006 book 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music both by CCM Magazine. Smith produced the album himself and has played on both piano and keyboards.
Smith earned his first Grammy Award nomination for Best Gospel Performance, Male and also earned four Dove Award nominations including Male Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year for "Great Is The Lord." The album was Gold certified in 1990.
