On the Way Up is the seventh studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Leon Patillo. It was released independently on November 7, 1989 by Ocean Records, with distribution by Word Records. Patillo wrote, arranged and produced the album himself. Patillo is once again a "one-man band" as he played all the instruments, with keyboard and drum programming. The album's sound is more urban and less pop mixing gospel and R&B with touches of hip hop. The title song was released as the lead single to Christian radio, particularly to Christian CHR but the song or the album failed to generate any interest.
Prior to On the Way Up, Patillo and his wife Jackie went through a divorce after nearly two decades of marriage and two sons, Gabriel and Marcel. He blamed the failure of his marriage on his own misplaced priorities, putting his ministry ahead of health and family. Patillo continued to record and tour independently in subsequent years. Patillo started a church in Long Beach, California and founded his own record label called Positive Pop. On the Way Up is currently out of print and is not available digitally.
