Part of the Mystery is the second and final solo album by DeGarmo & Key musician - songwriter Dana Key. It was released on August 3, 1995 by Ardent Records. The album was produced by Key and John Hampton. It is Key's second solo album, his first in five years and his first post -D&K album since their breakup earlier in 1995. Part of the Mystery was released on the Ardent label, named after the studio that D&K recorded all of their albums. It was a record label that Key co-founded and co-owned.
The album features the track and music video for "Dear Mr. Clapton," as a response song to Eric Clapton's 1992 Grammy Award winning hit "Tears in Heaven." Clapton's song is about the loss of his son Conor, who fell from the 53rd-floor window of a New York City apartment. Key, in a way, was telling him that he feels his pain and that his son is in a better place, knowing where there are no tears in heaven and that Jesus loves his little children more than we never know. Key also records a new version of "Mary," originally from D&K's 1979 album Straight On.
After the release of Part of the Mystery, Key retired from performing and was focusing more behind the scenes as a songwriter, producer and running Ardent Records. Key also hosted a television show featuring new, younger Christian bands and was serving as a pastor at The Love of Christ Church in Cordova,
Tennessee. Key died due to a ruptured blood clot on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at age 56, according to CCM Magazine's website.
