I Saw the Lord (1981)

Updated: Oct 7

I Saw the Lord is the 17th release and 5th album by Dallas Holm & Praise, released on October 21, 1981 by Greentree/Benson Records. The album was produced by Phil Johnson.

The title song was the only track released to Christian radio as the lead single. It is Holm's visionary song about seeing the Lord Jesus face-to-face, there in heaven. The song was Holm's only number one hit on the Christian AC chart in the spring of 1982 for eight weeks and is reminiscent of his 1978 classic "Rise Again." Holm covers the Bob Dylan track "I Believe in You," originally from his 1979 album Gotta Serve Somebody. Although the band Praise did not play any instruments on the album, Holm, Tim Johnson and Randy Adams provide backing vocals. Rick Norris did not perform on the album, but is photographed with the other members with Praise on the inside album folder jacket. The album was performed by various studio musicians. This is the last album to feature Praise member Adams as he left the group and was replaced by musician Rick Crawford on touring.

I Saw the Lord was the group's first and only number one album on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart in 1982, their biggest selling album since their 1977 live album. In 1982 at the 13th GMA Dove Awards, Holm was the most nominated artist with five including Artist of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Group of the Year with Praise, Songwriter of the Year and Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year, losing in all categories. The following year in 1983, the title song was nominated for Song of the Year. I Saw the Lord was first reissued on CD in 1990 as a double disc CD with Signal with all 11 tracks but when it was reissued again as a solo CD in 1993, the track "Along the Way" was omitted. The album is currently out of print and is not available digitally. A YouTube link to listen to the album is posted below this article.
