- The Lazarus Heart (1994)
The Lazarus Heart is the 13th studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Randy Stonehill . It was released independently in the fall of 1994 on Stonehill's label Street Level Records, with distribution by REX Music. It is the first of two albums to credit under his last name Stonehill. After more than a decade on Word Records, Stonehill decided to release The Lazarus Heart independently. The album is produced by Jimmie Lee Sloas, formerly of The Imperials , who also produced the Christian rock band PFR. Stonehill wrote the whole album with some songwriting assistance with Rick Elias, Cheri Keaggy ( Phil Keaggy 's niece-in-law and a CCM artist), Terry Scott Taylor, Phil Maderia and Dave Perkins. The album is a temporary return to his commercial sound reminiscent of his mid 1980s releases, but catering to a 1990s audience. The lead single "I Turn to You," with harmony vocals by Christine Denté of Out of the Grey , became Stonehill's first and only number one Christian radio hit. The second single "In Jesus' Name" features guest vocals by Michael W. Smith , who also plays keyboards. A music video was made for the track featuring Stonehill and Smith. Other guest artists and musicians who helped on the album include Bob Carlisle , Gary Chapman , David Robertson, Riki Michele, Jerry Chamberlain and Gordon Kennedy among others. Incidentally, Kennedy and Sloas would later form the Christian rock band Dogs of Peace in 1995. Track listing 1. A Promise Made is a Promise Kept (Randy Stonehill, Rick Elias) -5:45 2. - Stories (1993)
Stories is a compilation album by Christian singer - songwriter Randy Stonehill , released on May 25, 1993 by Myrrh/Word Records. Stories is a collection of Stonehill's "story songs" that are taken from his previous releases on the Myrrh label of mostly ballads including "Still, Small Voice," " Rachel Delevoryas," "Coming Back Soon," "Turning Thirty" and six other tracks. Terry Scott Taylor, who produced Stonehill's previous album Wonderama , produced two new tracks "I Thirst for You" and "Charlie the Weatherman" as well as an acoustic recording of The Wild Frontier track "Hope of Glory." Stonehill dedicated this collection to fellow musician, singer and songwriter Mark Heard who hide died from suffering a heart attack on stage during his final performance at Cornerstone Festival in Chicago, Illinois just a few weeks prior in August 1992. - Wonderama (1992)
Wonderama is the 12th studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Randy Stonehill , released on January 21, 1992 by Myrrh/Word Records. The album was produced by Terry Scott Taylor. Stonehill has come full circle with Wonderama , with Taylor of Daniel Amos (or D.A.) producing. It is Taylor's first album that he produced for Stonehill since 1983 when he produced Between the Glory and the Flame and Equator . Stonehill continues his acoustic folk rock sound as heard from his last two releases, Return to Paradise and Until We Have Wings , but in a more broader scope. Wonderama is a concept album divided into two acts featuring satirical songs, heart-rendering ballads and experimental mood pieces all mixed together with the eclectic eccentricity that Taylor is known for from his band Daniel Amos and even his own solo material. Stonehill and Taylor wrote six songs for this album. Stonehill introduces the musicians known as The Wonderama Band that played on the album: Rick Elias (guitars), Rob Watson (keyboards), Tim Chandler (bass), David Raven (drums) and Stonehill (guitars). Memorable songs include "Great Big Stupid World" and "Rachel Delevoryas," which tells the story of a misfit woman who found music to be an outlet for expression. Wonderama debuted and peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. This is also Stonehill's final album on the Myrrh label after being there for more than a decade. No tracks have charted on the Christian music charts for this release. Track listing All songs written by Randy Stonehill and Terry Scott Taylor, except where noted. Act I 1. Wonderama -6:21 2. - Return to Paradise (1989)
Return to Paradise is the eleventh studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Randy Stonehill , released on September 19, 1989 by Myrrh/Word Records. The album was produced by fellow singer - songwriter Mark Heard with Stonehill co-producing. Return to Paradise is, in some ways, a sequel and a reference to his 1976 album Welcome to Paradise . The album is more acoustic-driven, thanks to Heard's production. Heard capitalizes on the back-to-basics vibe by adding fretless and acoustic basses, pedal and lap steel guitars, fiddles, violas and percussion to the mix as well as his use of the mandolin and accordion. Stonehill's friend and fellow musician Phil Keaggy plays a 12-string guitar on the track "Love Tells No Lies." Stonehill was the first to record Heard's song "Strong Hand of Love." Heard himself would record his version of the track on his 1990 album Dry Bones Dance and was also covered by many artists. Return to Paradise was named as one of the 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music by CCM Magazine in 2001, listing the album at number 76. - Can't Buy a Miracle (1988)
Can't Buy a Miracle is the tenth studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Randy Stonehill , released on April 26, 1988 by Myrrh/Word Records. The album was produced by Dave Perkins. Can't Buy a Miracle continues the rock sound previously heard from his 1986 release The Wild Frontier , but with more diversity. "Brighter Day" has more of a country rock flare featuring Gary Chapman on backing vocals, while "Cold Rock the Groove" sounds like the 1983 Yes track "Owner of a Lonely Heart" meeting the avant-garde synth pop group Art of Noise. That track features guest vocals by Glenn and Wendi Kaiser of the Christian hard rock band Resurrection Band (aka Rez Band). The highlight of the album is the Stonehill-penned ballad "Coming Back Soon," which is an expression of God's devotion for those on earth for whom Christ may seem absent but for whom He will return soon. It also was sung as inspiration for his then-five year old daughter Heather, who told her dad to not forget her when Stonehill was going on a long trip and that he was, as the song's title, "coming back soon." Stonehill and producer - musician Perkins wrote six of the album's nine tracks with Stonehill writing the remaining three songs himself. Other guests include Russ Taff and Phil Keaggy . Can't Buy a Miracle is the first Stonehill album to not chart on the Christian albums chart. NOTE: in a unique album promotion, the LP cover is in two variations: the front cover shows the artist's name and album title along with the throwback font of the Myrrh label and a bar code. The back album cover features what looks like a vintage photo of Stonehill along with the artist's name and album title. The back album cover can also pass as the front album cover, so it works well either way. Track listing All songs written by Randy Stonehill and Dave Perkins, except where noted. 1. It's Now -4:07 2. - The Wild Frontier (1986)
The Wild Frontier is the ninth studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Randy Stonehill , released on November 24, 1986 by Myrrh/Word Records. The album was produced by Dave Perkins. The Wild Frontier is a "true to form" return to rock and roll with this album, reminiscent of his 1970s albums like Welcome to Paradise . The title song was released as the lead single to Christian Rock radio and became a hit. Some of the tracks are very Bruce Springsteen-like with its brand of heartland rock and combined with a couple of ballads. Stonehill and Perkins wrote five songs together with Stonehill writing four by himself and recorded a cover of The Youngbloods' 1969 hit "Get Together" (#5 Billboard Hot 100). Stonehill made music videos for the tracks "Defender" and "The Hope of Glory." The Wild Frontier debuted and peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart in 1987. NOTE: Peter Noone, lead singer of the English pop rock band Herman's Hermits is one of the backing singers on the album. Also providing backing vocals are Tonio K and Gary Chapman . - Love Beyond Reason (1985)
Love Beyond Reason is the eighth studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Randy Stonehill , released on June 17, 1985 by Myrrh/Word Records. The album was produced and arranged by Barry Miller Kaye with engineering and mixing by Stonehill's friend and folk rock singer - songwriter Mark Heard. The album peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. Love Beyond Reason became very successful in the strength of its lead single, "I Could Never Say Goodbye." The track is a vocal duet with popular CCM singer - songwriter Amy Grant . Grant had just released her first mainstream album Unguarded at the time of Stonehill's release, with the duet track and Grant's "Find a Way" both climbing up the Christian radio charts at the same time. "I Could Never Say Goodbye" earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group. It was Stonehill's only sole Grammy nomination. The rest of Love Beyond Reason is a pop/rock album. Highlights include an uptempo version of "Until Your Love Broke Through," a song Stonehill co-wrote with Jesus Music legend Keith Green back in 1976, "The Gods of Men" with Bryan Duncan providing backing vocals, the title song and "Hymn." To go along with the audio release, Stonehill also put out a collection of music videos on VHS titled Love Beyond Reason - The Video Album with five videos from this album plus "Still Small Voice" from Celebrate This Heartbeat . The cassette and CD versions also contain an extended version of "The Gods of Men." Track listing of the CD Version All songs written by Randy Stonehill, except where noted. 1.
