- Third Day
Third Day was an American Christian rock band formed in Marietta, Georgia in 1991. The band was founded by lead singer Mac Powell, guitarist Mark Lee and Billy Wilkins. The band's name is a reference to the biblical accounts of the resurrection of Jesus on the "third day" following His crucifixion. The band was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame on September 19, 2009. They have sold over 7 million albums in the United States and had 28 number one Christian album chart radio hits. Their fans are known as "Gomers" after a song on their second album about Gomer, who is the wife the prophet Hosea, mentioned in the Bible in the Book of Hosea. They dissolved in 2018 following a farewell tour and reunited in 2025 for a 30th anniversary tour in 2026. During their career, Third Day has won four Grammy Awards and 25 Dove Awards. In 1991, high-schoolers Mac Powell and Mark Lee formed Third Day as a Christian music group with pianist Billy Wilkins. At a 1992 event at Lee's Church, Third Day performed alongside a band called the Bullard Family Singers, which featured David Carr and Tai Anderson. Third Day invited Carr and Anderson to join them shortly after. In 1993, the band started playing more frequently in the Atlanta region in order to make money to record an album. Wilkins left the group in order to pursue his teaching career. Third Day recorded at Furies Studios in Atlanta and with the production help of Carr, Long Time Forgotten was released in 1993, producing and selling 2,000 copies. In 1994 the band brought on a second guitarist, August McCoy on electric guitar. That same year, the band's second album, Contagious, was self-financed for $3,000 and recorded at Furies Studios. 1,000 CDs and cassette copies of the demo were released. Later that year, August McCoy exited the band to go to college. Also, later that year, while playing in Marietta, at the Strand Theatre, the owners offered the band a contract to sign with new independent record label Gray Dot Records. The band released the album Third Day, which sold 20,000 copies. Shortly after, Reunion Records bought out their Gray Dot contract and signed the band to a multi-album deal. In 1995, the band started looking for another second guitarist. After hearing Brad Avery play with singer Chris Carder, Avery was asked to audition. After playing "Consuming Fire" during the first rehearsal, Avery was officially asked to join the band. Reunion Records released the now official version of Third Day, which has sold over 300,000 copies and was well received by critics. The album also yielded their only mainstream rock radio hit in the U.S., "Nothing at All," which peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard rock charts. Later in 1996, Christian music headliner Newsboys asked Third Day to open for them at five West Coast shows. The band also launched their own 65-city tour with All Star United and Seven Day Jesus opening for them. In 1997, the band was nominated for a Dove Award in the category of New Artist of the Year and their video for "Consuming Fire" directed by Chris Metzler and Jeff Springer won a Billboard Music Award in the category of Best Christian Video. The video was shot on location in Bombay Beach, California and other places around the Salton Sea. This experience and discovering Leonard Knight's Salvation Mountain nearby later inspired the album artwork for the band's album Revelation. In 1997, the band started working on their second album, Conspiracy No. 5. The album was produced by Sam Taylor, who had previously worked with King's X and other Christian bands. The album was nominated for a Grammy and won Dove Awards for Rock Album of the Year and Rock Recorded Song of the Year for the track "Alien." The following year, the band toured around the United States, both alone and again opening for Newsboys. Also in 1998, the band recorded a cover of Michael W. Smith's "Agnus Dei" for his Dove Award-winning compilation worship project Exodus. In 1998, Third Day started work on their next album Time with producer Monroe Jones. Time earned the band their second Grammy nomination and won them another Dove Award. Some of the songs that were recorded for possible inclusion in the album, but left out during production, are on the EP Southern Tracks. During the band's live shows they included a significant portion of worship music, prompting the band to release an album made up exclusively of worship songs. The subsequent album Offerings: A Worship Album took about a week to record. In 2000, to support both Time and Offerings, Third Day went on tour alongside female rock singer - songwriter Jennifer Knapp. Later in the same year, the band collaborated on the project City on a Hill: Songs of Worship and Praise with FFH, Caedmon's Call, SonicFlood, Jars of Clay, and others. In 2001, the band played in Australia and New Zealand on the heels of the success of the Offerings album. While touring in the US, Third Day recorded a concert attended by 15,000 fans at the HiFi Buys Amphitheatre in Atlanta to be released as their first DVD, The Offerings Experience. Third Day won more Dove Awards and, additionally, Grammy Awards throughout the 2000s. More albums were released in the 2000s: Come Together, Offerings II: All I Have to Give, Wire, Wherever You Are, Christmas Offerings and Revelation. The band entered the 2010s with Move, Miracle and Lead Us Back: Songs of Worship. Then in 2017, Third Day celebrated their 25th anniversary with their final studio album Revival. On March 2, 2018, Third Day announced a farewell tour with 12 shows and then later expanded to 20 shows. They performed their final show in Denver, Colorado on June 27, 2018. In June 2025, the band announced that they would regroup with the lineup of Powell, Lee, Carr, and Anderson to celebrate their 30th anniversary with a tour which began March 2026, emphasizing that the tour would not produce a reunion, just the band playing their greatest hits of their Christian radio and worship songs. On June 12, 2026, Third Day was featured in a new re-imagined recording of TobyMac's track "Campfire (That Very Love)" and released as a non-album digital track. - Wire (2004)
Wire is the seventh studio album by the Christian rock band Third Day, released on May 4, 2004 by Essential Records/Provident Music. The album was produced by Paul Ebersold. Wire returned Third Day to their rock and roll roots and was largely carried by the energetic guitar riffs that pervade its songs, although the forceful lyrics also contribute significantly. The album's songs deal with numerous themes. "Wire," the title track, is a song about the pressure to succeed in modern society. "I Believe," "I Got a Feeling," "Innocent," and other tracks deal with sin, faith, and renewal from a Christian perspective. "Billy Brown" is a song that explores the readiness of people to follow and even idolize entertainment figures. Wire was preceded by two singles: "I Believe" was sent to Christian AC radio and "Come On Back to Me" to Christian CHR and Christian Rock formats. Both songs charted on Radio & Records in their respective Christian format charts and both songs went Top 5. It was a different story on the Billboard Christian music charts as "Come On Back to Me" peaked at number 21 on the Hot Christian Songs and Christian Airplay while "I Believe" topped at number 1 on the Christian AC Airplay chart and peaked at number 3 on the Hot Christian Songs and Christian Airplay. Their further single "You Are Mine," which explores themes of divine grace, human brokenness, and gratitude for Jesus Christ's sacrifice, was the band's first multi-format single on Radio & Records, charting on CHR, AC and Inspo, their first appearance on the latter chart. Wire debuted and peaked at number 12 on the Billboard 200 while it topped the Top Christian Albums chart. It is their first number one Top Christian Album title since Time. Third Day collected their fifth Gold certification for Wire by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) by the end of the year. In 2005, Third Day won their second Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album at the 47th Grammy Awards and later won a Dove Award for Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year at the 36th GMA Dove Awards. - Come Together (2001)
Come Together is the fifth studio album by the Christian rock band Third Day, released on November 6, 2001 by Essential Records/Provident Music. The album was produced by Monroe Jones. Released after the success of back-to back Gold sellers Time and Offerings, Third Day returns with Come Together with the title track released as the lead single. It was used as a tribute to 9/11 and gained significant airplay in both Christian Rock and Christian CHR radio stations. "Show Me Your Glory" was released to Christian AC radio as the lead single. Written by the band's guitarist Mark Lee and Marc Byrd (co-writer of "God of Wonders"), the song's lyrics draw direct inspiration from major biblical figures who experienced the overwhelming presence of God. Both tracks topped Radio and Records Christian music charts simultaneously with the title song on CHR and Rock and "Show Me Your Glory" on AC. "Show Me Your Glory" was listed at number 24 in 2006 from CCM Magazine's book The 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music. "40 Days" draws heavily from the biblical significance of the number 40, which traditionally represents a defined period of testing, trial, and preparation, such as 40 days and nights of rain during the Noah's ark narrative and Jesus' 40 days and nights spent fasting in the desert while being tempted in the wilderness by Satan. The album closer "Nothing Compares," according to lead singer Mac Powell, who also wrote it, was directly inspired by the Apostle Paul's words in Philippians 3:7-11. In that scripture, Paul explains that all of his earthly achievements, riches, and status are completely worthless when measured against the "surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord." The song functions as a reminder that no material success, human accolade, or worldly experience can ever match the fulfillment found in a relationship with God. Come Together debuted and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums and at number 31 on the Billboard 200 Albums charts. It gave Third Day their third Gold album by April 2002, less than six months after it was originally released. Third Day collected Dove Awards for the next two years for this project including winning Group of the Year in 2002 and 2003 consecutively. Also in 2003 after three previous Grammy nominations, the band won their first Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album at the 45th Grammy Awards. Third Day also released their second live concert video on DVD in 2003 entitled Third Day Live in Concert: The Come Together Tour, which captures the group performing a mix of songs from this release, worship tracks and previous live favorites. The DVD menu also includes the making of the album, band commentary, interviews with the band and more. Track listing All songs written by Mac Powell, except where noted. 1. - Time (1999)
Time is the third major studio album by the Christian rock band Third Day. It was released on August 24, 1999 by Essential Records with distribution by Provident Music Distribution and Sony Music. The album was produced by Monroe Jones with Jim Dineen co-producing on two tracks. Starting with this release and afterwards in their career, Third Day was still with Provident Music but switched labels from Reunion Records to its subsidiary label Essential, which was home to other Christian rock acts like Jars of Clay and Caedmon's Call at the time. Time marked a return to the band's southern rock roots leaving their alternative grunge rock sound heard from their previous release Conspiracy No. 5 and the band felt that some of their Gomers (their fan base) felt disappointed when they shifted their sound for that release. Time featured 10 songs chosen from more than 30 the band had managed to write during their tour the previous year. Some of the songs left out can be heard in the EP Southern Tracks, which was released with limited copies of Time. Southern Tracks was recorded live, in the round, at Southern Tracks studio in Atlanta, Georgia. The album's lead single, "I've Always Loved You," was written and sung from a first person perspective of God speaking directly to humanity. It emphasizes unconditional, everlasting love and grace. The lyrics highlight that God's love existed "even before there was time" and persists even when people turn away. Lead singer Mac Powell has said that this track is his personal favorite song and has sung it in Third Day concerts and in his solo concerts, even to this day. "I've Always Loved You" gave Third Day some Christian AC exposure for the first time, when they were only limited to Christian rock. It topped both the Christian CHR and Christian AC charts. Their rock single "Sky Falls Down" also topped the Christian Rock chart. Time gave Third Day their first number one album on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart and peaked at number 63 on the Billboard 200. The band went on to win Dove Awards for this release and earned their second Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album. Time was Third Day's first Gold certified album in 2002 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of 500,000 copies. On August 23, 2024 nearly a day after its original release, Time was reissued for its 25th anniversary on vinyl coming in three colors: red, blue and tan. The Time reissue was also available on digital platforms containing the 10 original tracks, along with the four tracks from the Southern Tracks EP and three previously unreleased live tracks. - Third Day (1996)
Third Day is a reissue release of their 1995 self-titled album by the Christian rock band Third Day. It was released on February 22, 1996 by Reunion Records. This marks the official national debut album by the band. Their self-titled album was produced by David Mardis. It is a reissue of their third release that was originally issued on the independent Gray Dot label but with a different album cover and different track listing. It has the same tracks from the original release, but added two additional songs: "Praise Song" and "Nothing At All." "Nothing At All" gave Third Day their only exposure to the mainstream rock market when that track started charting on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and peaked at number 34. Before his death in 1997, singer and songwriter Rich Mullins was an additional musician playing his signature hammered dulcimer on the album. Chris Christian was A&R but was credited as Chris Smith. Third Day charted and peaked at number 11 on the Top Christian Albums and at number 24 on the Heatseekers Albums charts in Billboard magazine. In 1997, Third Day earned their first two Dove Award nominations for New Artist of the Year and Rock Recorded Song of the Year for "Forever." Their music video for "Consuming Fire" won them a Billboard Music Award for Best Christian Music Video in 1996 and at the World Music & Independent Film Festival for Best Gospel Music Video in 2011. To date, Third Day has sold more than 461,000 copies, approaching near Gold status. A Wikipedia article claims that this release was Gold certified, but according to the RIAA's website, it is not Gold certified. You can click here for the band's certifications of their albums and videos. CCM Magazine named "Consuming Fire" as one of the 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music in their 2006 book, listing it at number 32. On October 22, 2022, a 25th anniversary edition of their self-titled album was released as a 2 vinyl set with the first LP containing the original 12 tracks and the second LP containing live performances from various concert dates consisting of eight songs from the album. - Conspiracy No. 5 (1997)
Conspiracy No. 5 is the second major studio album by the Christian rock band Third Day. It was released on August 26, 1997 by Reunion Records with distribution by Provident Music Distribution and Sony Music. The album was produced by Sam Taylor, who worked as a video producer for ZZ Top and produced and managed some Houston, Texas area rock bands like King's X and others. Producer Taylor encouraged Third Day to experiment with different musical styles. The album's name came from the band's interest in conspiracy theories, and a dictionary definition defining "conspiracy" as people gathering together to accomplish a common goal. As opposed to their 1996 self-titled release, which Drew comparisons to Hootie & the Blowfish - comparisons which the band considered unfair -Conspiracy No. 5 adopts a more aggressive alternative rock style with "grunge-style" guitars. The lyrics are less straightforwardly religious, but focus on the sinful nature of humanity and the need for redemption. The album's highlights include "Gomer's Theme," which is based on the wife of the minor prophet Hosea in the Bible. In the Book of Hosea, he is commanded by God to marry Gomer, despite her infidelity, as a sign of Israel's unfaithfulness towards God. The song is written from the perspective of Hosea and God, who criticize Gomer for her infidelity. Third Day also named their fans as "Gomers." One of their further singles "My Hope Is You" draws lyrically on Psalm 25. "Your Love Endures" is the band's only real ballad that closes the album, then segues into a hidden bonus track, a reprise of "Who I Am." Out of the 13 tracks on Conspiracy No. 5, eight of those were released as singles to Christian radio, particularly to Christian CHR and Christian Rock. No singles were sent to Christian AC for this release. Conspiracy No. 5 debuted and peaked number 2 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums and at number 50 on the Billboard 200 Albums charts, making its first appearance on the latter chart. Although, despite the album's success, some of the members of Third Day felt that it was a "mis-step" because the band "put intensity over the songs" but they had become more experienced performing live shows during the accompanying tour. In 1998, Third Day won their first two Dove Awards at the 29th GMA Dove Awards for Rock Album of the Year and Rock Recorded Song of the Year for "Alien." The band also earned their first Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album for this release. Conspiracy No. 5 so far has sold more than 305,000 copies, about 100,000 less than their 1996 self-titled release. Track listing All songs written by Mac Powell, except where noted. 1. Peace -3:30 2. - The Imperials
The Imperials are an American Christian music vocal group that has been active for 60 years. Originating as a southern gospel quartet, the innovative group would become pioneers of contemporary Christian music in the 1960s. There have been many changes for the band in membership and musical styles over the years. They would go on to win four Grammy Awards, 15 Dove Awards and be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Their most successful period was in 1977 when Russ Taff joined the group the previous year and released albums Sail On, One More Song for You and Priority and would win Grammy and Dove Awards during that period between 1978 and 1982. Taff would leave the group in 1981 to begin his solo career and was replaced by Paul Smith. Stand by the Power with Smith in the lead spot was released and was even more successful. Smith stayed on for two more albums and released his final album with the Imperials Let the Wind Blow in 1985. Smith and long-time member Jim Murray would both leave the group after the release of Let the Wind Blow. Ron Hemby and Jimmie Lee Sloas were brought in to replace Smith and Murray for their albums This Year's Model and Free the Fire. Sloas left the group in 1989 to focus more behind the scenes on producing and songwriting and David Robertson replaced Sloas on their 1990 album Love's Still Changing Hearts. After that album, Robertson and Hemby left the group. Armond Morales (the group's founder and bass singer) brought in his sister Pam Morales, along with Jonathan Pierce for two more albums Big God and Stir It Up. Pam Morales at that time was the first and only female vocalist of the group. The Imperials have had number one songs in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. As of 2024, the new Imperials line-up consists of Smith, Hemby, Rick Evans and Rod Fletcher and have recently released an EP entitled Blessed. - Let the Wind Blow (1985)
Let the Wind Blow is the 30th studio album by the Christian music vocal group The Imperials. Released in February 1985, it was their first album on the Myrrh Records label, after switching from Word Records' other label DaySpring. The group saw their biggest turnover since Sherman Andrus and Terry Blackwood's departure in 1976 when both lead singer Paul Smith and tenor Jim Murray decided to leave. Smith opted to return to his solo career and continue on contemporary Christian music (Smith previously released two independent albums in the late 1970s before joining The Imperials in 1982) and after close to 20 years since joining the group, Murray sought to perform more traditionally styled gospel music again. Smith was replaced by Danny Ward on tour to promote Let the Wind Blow, but he left before recording an album with the group. Let the Wind Blow peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. The Imperials were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group for the album. Brown Bannister produced the album giving them a more uptempo feel and a more contemporary pop sound than in previous albums. Track listing 1. In the Promised Land (Chris Eaton) -4:18 2.
