Shelter (1996)

Updated: Jan 31

Shelter is the fourth studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Gary Chapman, released on February 27, 1996 by Reunion Records. The album is produced by Michael Omartian.

Chapman and Omartian continue the success of The Light Inside with Shelter, with its country pop mix and opens the album with an a cappella version of the hymn "Great Is Thy Faithfulness." Amy Grant provides guest vocals on the album's first single "One of Two" and Alison Krauss provides guest vocals and plays the viola on "If You Ever Need Me." After the release of the album, Chapman won Male Vocalist of the Year a couple of months later at the 27th GMA Dove Awards, in which in his award speech, Chapman quipped "Are you sure you gave it to the right Chapman?" referring to Steven Curtis Chapman who won the title previously and was nominated again during the ceremony. Gary would lose to Steve Curtis the following year.

Chapman also won a Dove Award for Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year for the track "A Man After Your Own Heart" from the Oswald Chambers-themed album My Utmost for His Highest and also given to its writers Billy Sprague and Wayne Kirkpatrick. Chapman re-records the song for this album and does the Mylon LeFevre arrangement of "Gospel Ship" to close the album. Shelter makes chart appearances on the following Billboard album charts:

#7 Top Christian Albums

#12 Heatseekers Albums

#192 Top 200 Albums

During that time period, Chapman hosted the popular prime time cable show Prime Time Country on The Nashville Network (TNN). He continued hosting the show until 1999. Chapman was also hosting The CCM Countdown radio show. Chapman's daughter Sarah appears on the CD cover and photo insert with her dad.
