The Light Inside (1994)

Updated: Jun 2

The Light Inside is the third studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Gary Chapman, released on May 26, 1994 by Reunion Records. The album is produced by Michael Omartian.

In what is now considered a "return" rather than a "comeback," Chapman released The Light Inside and became a best seller and critically acclaimed. It is his first new album in seven years and it is his most religious album since Sincerely Yours, but has some of the country pop elements of Everyday Man. The lead single and music video "Sweet Glow of Mercy" marked a return to Chapman on Christian radio and became a big hit. Chapman also remade two earlier songs: "Finally" and "Treasure." Both songs were originally recorded on his late 1982 live album Happenin'. Other hits followed include "Where Are the Broken Hearts," "Floodgates of Love" and "Sweet Jesus."

Amy Grant (Chapman's first wife) got involved in the album co-writing the track "Love Will Be Our Anchor" and providing backing vocals on "Razor's Edge." Chapman also plays guitars (bass, electric, mandolin and slide) and producer Omartian plays piano and keyboards throughout the album among other musicians. The Light Inside peaked at the Top 10 at number 10 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. In 1995, Chapman was nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year (his first competitive nomination) at the 26th GMA Dove Awards, losing to Steven Curtis Chapman (no relation to Gary Chapman) and was touring with Grant as a special guest and a touring band mate on her House of Love tour.
