The Altar (1989)

The Altar is the third studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Ray Boltz, released in the fall of 1989 by Diadem Music Group with distribution by Word Incorporated in association with Ray Boltz Music. The album was produced by Steve Millikan.

The Altar follows up the successful second album Thank You with more songs of inspiration and hope. The album's lead single, the title track, is often associated with altar calls and moments of personal surrender in Christian services. The lyrics emphasize that the altar is a place to "give burdens to the Lord" and find mercy. Other notable tracks include "Feel the Nails" and "The Hammer," which focus on themes of redemption and the crucifixion.

"Let's Begin Again" is a song that explores the complexities of marriage through a faith-based lens. Featuring Boltz and vocalist Stephanie Cratch, the track describes a couple who has been together long enough for the "shiny new feel" of their relationship to wear off, leading to feelings of isolation and distance. Its core message is a call for the couple to "begin again" by putting aside their personal feelings and trusting in God to lead their marriage.

The Altar was Boltz's second Top 10 album on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart as it peaked at number 7 in March 1990.
