- Pray (1998)
Pray is the fifth studio album by Australian Christian singer - songwriter Rebecca St. James , released on October 20, 1998 by ForeFront Records. Produced by Tedd T. A proper follow up to her 1996 Gold selling album God , Pray would be her second Gold selling album, certified in 2006 by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for sales of 500,000 copies. In 2000, St. James won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album at the 42nd Grammy Awards. The album is a departure from the Alanis Morissette pretensions of God and in favor is a synth-driven pop sound as preceded by the lead single "Mirror." The song as well as the title song both did well on both Christian CHR and Christian Rock charts. St. James covers two songs: "Hold Me Jesus" by Rich Mullins and "Lord You're Beautiful" by Keith Green . The CD version contains a hidden bonus track of the hymn "Be Thou My Vision." Pray peaked at number 5 on both the Top Christian Albums and Heatseekers Album charts and climbed to number 168 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. In 1999, St. James released a VHS to go with the Pray album titled No Secrets and it features interviews with herself, her family and some of her friends and fellow recording artists, plus the "Pray" music video. For a limited time the VHS came with a Yes, I Believe In God single with 3 tracks: "Yes, I Believe in God" and two radio remix versions of "Omega" and "Pray." Like Michael W. Smith 's 1999 song "This is Your Time," "Yes, I Believe in God" is a tribute and dedication to shooting victim Cassie Bernall, when the shooter asked her a question about believing in God at the Columbine High School shooting in Columbine, Colorado. The song was released as a radio-only single and made the Top 5 on the Christian radio charts and would later appear on her 2003 compilation album Wait for Me: The Best from Rebecca St. James . - Sheltering Tree (2000)
Sheltering Tree is the tenth studio album by the Christian music group NewSong . It was released on October 10, 2000 by Benson Records and Jive Records with mainstream distribution by Provident Music Distribution and Zomba/BMG Group (later to be acquired by Sony Music). Sheltering Tree welcomed NewSong into the 2000s. The sound of this album is more adult contemporary, kind of leaving behind the polished pop from their previous albums People Get Ready and Love Revolution . With Russ Lee and Scotty Wilbanks gone, NewSong recruited Christian artist Michael O'Brien, musician Steve Reischl and Matt Butler, another Truth vocalist. The lead single "Red Letter Day" revolves around the theme of a significant, joyous day of spiritual importance, drawing on the concept of a "red-letter day" as a time to celebrate life-changing moments, likely focusing on faith, salvation, or a new beginning . "Wide Open" focuses on the theme of redemption and the expansive nature of God's love, centering on the imagery of Jesus' arms being stretched wide open on the cross to welcome believers . The title song "Sheltering Trees" features some vocal help from Rebecca St. James , Natalie Grant , Charlie Peacock , Third Day lead singer Mac Powell, Carolyn Arends and Gospel singer Fred Hammond. Sheltering Tree 's real highlight is the Christmas bonus track "The Christmas Shoes." Released as a holiday single after the album's release, the song is based on a popular 1990s urban legend/story about a young boy trying to buy shoes for his terminally ill mother on Christmas Eve . The boy tells a stranger he wants her to look beautiful when she meets Jesus, prompting the stranger to pay for them, reminding him of the true meaning of the season. NewSong caught the attention of radio personality, Isaiah "DC" Daniel (then, of "Steve & DC") and began collaborating on production ideas for future projects. DC Daniel, Eddie Carswell and Leonard Ahlstrom wrote the song with Ahlstrom producing. In 2002, Donna VanLiere produced a novelization of the song, which was published by St. Martin's Press. The book became a made-for-TV movie in December of that same year. NewSong also released a music video of "The Christmas Shoes" in 2002. "The Christmas Shoes" was a surprise hit for NewSong as it crossed over into the mainstream market climbing to number 1 on the Billboard AC chart for one week while peaking at number 31 on the Hot Country Songs and at number 42 on the Hot 100. The single achieved Gold status by the Recording Industry Association of America by July 31, 2020 selling half a million downloads. Thanks to the track "The Christmas Shoes," Sheltering Tree has peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart by early January 2001 (NewSong's first Top 10 album). It also made chart appearances on the Billboard 200 where it peaked at number 130 and at number 2 on the Top Heatseakers Albums charts. Track listing 1. - The Christmas Shoes (2001)
The Christmas Shoes is the 11th studio and first Christmas album by the Christian music group NewSong . It was released on October 23, 2001 by Reunion Records/ Provident Music Group. Due to the success of "The Christmas Shoes" from Sheltering Tree , the song's popularity was enough to warrant it a Christmas album for the group. Some changes were happening to NewSong as musician and songwriter Leonard Ahlstrom left the band after more than six years after the release of Sheltering Tree as he retired. And NewSong's previous label Benson Records was folded by Zomba in 2001. Still with Provident Music, the group was transferred over to their label Reunion Records starting with this release. In addition to the title song, The Christmas Shoes contains a mix of traditional and new holiday recordings including a new recording of their 1989 hit "Light Your World." The album topped the Billboard Heatseekers Albums giving NewSong their first number one album. It also peaked at number 9 on the Top Christian Albums and at number 113 on the Billboard 200. This collection contains 13 of the group's best known Christian radio hits and album favorites from their Benson releases including their number one songs "Miracles," "Got Me Going," "My Heart's Already There" and "Rhythm of the World." It also contains three brand new tracks: the lead single "Can't Keep a Good Man Down" featuring guest vocals by Christine Denté of Out of the Grey , "Like Minded, Like Hearted," a song about racial unity sung as a duet with the Christian R&B trio Out of Eden and "Jesus to the World (Roaring Lambs)," which was inspired by Christian author and speaker Bob Briner who died later that year. "Like Minded, Like Hearted" also appears in the various artists compilation album Bridges: Songs of Unity and Purpose featuring Christian and Soul Gospel artists performing together. The group is down to five members, but, for a time, is still intact with NewSong founders Eddie Carswell and Billy Goodwin, along with Russ Lee, Scotty Wilbanks and Leonard Ahlstrom. For this album, production duties were split as Paul Mills produced six songs, while Christopher Harris produced three and Rodney Mills produced only two sons. Love Revolution produced four number one songs and a Top 10 song on the Christian AC chart making this album even more better than People Get Ready in terms of good quality songwriting and airplay. The second single and music video "Rhythm of the World" has a mix of pop and world beat influences. "More Fun Than Sin" is a rousing ode to abundant life. In addition to NewSong's vocals, additional musicians and backing vocalists contributed to the album including future CCM artist Natalie Grant ( Love Revolution is also the name of Grant's 2010 album). Co-lead vocalist Lee also got involved in songwriting co-writing six songs. Love Revolution peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. Later in 1997, NewSong released a limited edition enhanced CD (E-CD) entitled Joy to the Rhythm of the World . It contains the audio and video of "Rhythm of the World," four different versions of the Christmas hymn "Joy to the World," behind-the-scenes with NewSong, biography and more. It was nominated for a Dove Award for Enhanced CD of the Year in 1998. Track listing 1. Love Revolution (Eddie Carswell, Russ Lee, Leonard Ahlstrom) -4:32 2. - People Get Ready (1994)
People Get Ready is the eight studio album by the Christian music group NewSong . It was released on December 15, 1994 by Benson Records. The album was produced by Christopher Harris and Paul Mills. For the first time since NewSong was formed in 1981 as a quartet, the group reinvented themselves as a vocal band with People Get Ready . With the two original members, lead vocalist Billy Goodwin and primary songwriter and musician Eddie Carswell intact, gone are the two original members Eddie Middleton and Bobby Apon. Carswell and Goodwin brought in Russ Lee, who was a lead vocalist from the Christian vocal group Truth, musician Scotty Wilbanks and musician and songwriter Leonard Ahlstrom. Additional studio musicians performed as well. Also on the album was Christian vocalist Charles Billingsley, who has previously released two albums prior to joining NewSong. It is his only appearance on People Get Ready . After being with the group for two years, Billingsley left NewSong to resume his solo career releasing more albums, touring and is currently a worship leader at Thomas Road Baptist Church on the campus at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. The album's overall sound is still adult contemporary, but with more upbeat pop. It garnered two number one songs on the Christian AC chart with the lead single and music video "My Heart's Already There" and "When I'm With You." "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and "We Wear His Name" were also Top 10 hits. NewSong even covers the 1965 Curtis Mayfield-written title song, originally recorded by The Impressions (# 14 Billboard Hot 100, # 3 R&B). The rest of the album was written be Carswell and Ahlstrom on nine tracks. Also included on People Get Ready is a newly recorded version of their Easter-themed ballad "Arise My Love." It was originally recorded on their 1987 album Say Yes! when NewSong was a quartet. People Get Ready peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart by March 1995. That same year, NewSong created and started hosting a yearly Christian music festival tour spectacular, originally called January Jam, that featured the group and other CCM artists of all genres, stunt and/or comedy performances and various tour speakers. Since 2000, it has been renamed Winter Jam. In 1996, the album earned a Dove Award nomination for Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year. - Lifer (2017)
Lifer is the 11th studio album by the Christian rock band MercyMe , released on March 31, 2017 by Fair Trade Services. The album was produced by David Garcia and Ben Glover with Solomon Olds co-producing the track "Hello Beautiful." It was recorded in 2016 at four studios in Nashville, Tennessee. MercyMe returns after a three year absence with Lifer . The band asks the question of what is means to be a "lifer" in the kingdom of God. Amazon's review of this release says " Life is both a noun and a verb. It is the condition that distinguishes humans from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, functional activity, and continual change. It's about how to spend ones' life in a particular way, under particular circumstances, with vitality, vigor, and energy. When we do 'life' from a place of faith in God, we become unstoppable and unwavering. We feel connected to something so much bigger than ourselves and it's that understanding that makes us committed to be Lifer's." The album's lead single "Even If" was written by the band, along with producers Garcia and Glover, contemporary worship artist Tim Timmons and CCM singer and songwriter Crystal Lewis. Lead singer Bart Millard says "Even If" was written during a deeply personal trying time regarding his son Sam Millard's life-long battle with type 1 diabetes. It serves as a raw, honest declaration that God is worthy of praise and remains a source of hope even when prayers for healing go unanswered and life feels overwhelming (It is also the subject of the 2026 feature motion picture sequel I Can Only Imagine 2 )*. The song is MercyMe's biggest hit since "I Can Only Imagine" and peaked at the top of the Billboard Christian radio charts and the single was Gold certified in 2018 and then Platinum in 2019. "Even If" was the band's longest running number one hit on the Christian AC Airplay chart for 19 consecutive weeks, second only to the 21-week number one streak of their 2003 hit "Word of God Speak" on the same chart. Lifer also scored two more number ones with "Grace Got You" featuring Christian hip-hop artist John Reuben and "Best News Ever." The title song and "Happy Dance" were released as promotional singles. Lifer is MercyMe's 11th number one album on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. It also peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart giving them their 4th Top 10 album. The album sold 33,000 album equivalent units in its first week, 30,000 of which are pure sales. Lifer became MercyMe's ninth Gold selling album by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It is MercyMe's first album to be released on vinyl, in addition to CD and digital. A deluxe edition of Lifer was sold exclusively at Cracker Barrel stores with three bonus tracks. In 2018, MercyMe was nominated for two Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/ Song for "Even If." The following year, "Grace Got You" was nominated for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song. Also at the Dove Awards in 2018, the band was nominated for Artist of the Year and Contemporary Christian Artist of the Year and in 2019 they were nominated for Artist of the Year and Millard was nominated for Songwriter of the Year. This is MercyMe's final studio album of the 2010s. *On a side note: Crystal Lewis was the original sole songwriter of "Even If." The song was originally titled "My God is Able," but went through changes and re-writes. That's where Timmons and Millard came in. The film I Can Only Imagine 2 centers on the song, but does not mention Lewis. It depicts Timmons as the sole writer just for film fiction.
