  • The Winans

The Winans are an American R&B gospel quartet composed of four brothers whose additional siblings would also become famous gospel stars. The whole Winans legacy begins with their parents, Delores and David Winans, also known as Mom and Pop Winans, who raised their children in Detroit, Michigan in a home where participation in the Pentecostal Holiness Church constituted one's social life and gospel music reigned supreme. The Winans would become known as "the first family of gospel music." Nine of Mom and Pop's ten children are recording artists: the four brothers, twins Marvin and Carvin, Ronald and Michael, which make up The Winans, brothers BeBe and Daniel and sisters CeCe , Angie and Debbie. Marvin's former wife Vickie Winans is also a gospel recording artist and the children of Carvin, Marvin and Michael make up a short-lived group known as Winans Phase 2. Brothers Ronald, Carvin and Marvin made two albums in the mid 1970s without Michael under the name "The Testimonial Singers." They were discovered by Andraé Crouch in 1979 who signed them, along with Michael, to Light Records. Their first album Introducing The Winans was released in 1981. The album scored a hit with "The Question Is" and garnered them their first Grammy nomination. Two of their albums, Tomorrow and Return , made the list of CCM Magazine 's 2001 book The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music . Winner of seven Grammy Awards and have sold millions of records, The Winans have also tasted mainstream R&B success with their 1990 release Return , in the same vein as their brother/sister sibling act BeBe & CeCe Winans . They have released albums between 1981 and 1995. Sibling Ronald Winans died on June 17, 2005 due to heart complications. • BeBe & CeCe Winans

BeBe & CeCe Winans are an American gospel music brother and sister duo. BeBe and CeCe Winans are the seventh and eighth of the Winans family's ten children, most of whom have had gospel music careers. Together, they have received several awards, including three Grammy Awards. While BeBe and CeCe were in high school, four of their elder brothers formed the successful gospel group The Winans. Initially known as The Winans Part II, BeBe and CeCe first appeared in the public eye when they debuted in 1982 as part of the singing group The PTL Singers on the Christian television show The PTL Club . They were introduced by founder Jim Bakker, and recorded their first album Lord Lift Us Up in 1984 as a duo for PTL Records. BeBe and CeCe left PTL Singers in 1987 to pursue a musical career and that same year, Sparrow Records offered the two siblings a Gospel recording contract. Their mainstream debut release was the self-titled album BeBe & CeCe Winans . It was produced by Keith Thomas, who would go on to produce Amy Grant and singer/actress Vanessa Williams. The debut record gave them their first R&B hit, "I.O.U. Me", which topped R&B and inspirational charts and generated Grammy nominations, and Dove and Stellar Awards. CeCe also earned a Grammy for "Best Soul Gospel Performance, Female" for the song "For Always." They were one of the first African American artists to receive significant airplay on CCM radio stations and the second African American artists to receive the Dove Award for Group of the Year. BeBe and CeCe released four more albums throughout the 1990s. After their 1994 album Relationships , BeBe and CeCe took a break as a duo to focus on their solo careers. • Kenny Marks

Kenneth Michael Marks (November 6, 1950 – October 31, 2018) was an American Christian singer. Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, Marks is the son of Yugoslavian immigrants (Marks is an Anglicized, shortened form of Mrakovitch). Marks studied classical piano and played guitar at age thirteen. He graduated from Messiah College in Philadelphia in 1971 and immediately went to work singing at crusades for Billy Graham with his Afterglow Concert Series. In 1981, Marks first recorded appearance was on a various artists album titled Premier Performance on Myrrh Records with two songs on each side. A year later, Marks released his debut album Follow Him . Right Where You Are was released in 1984. It was on this album that Marks began to find his own definitive style as an artist and wanting to sing about relationships. Marks also started to record songs about a fictitious couple named Johnny and Jeannie. They were introduced as separate, single people in the track "Growing Up Too Fast" (from Right Where You Are ) where they are dealing with emotions and impulses. They meet at a party on the track "The Party's Over" (from 1985's Attitude ). They get together in the back seat of Johnny's car and resulted in a pregnancy which robs them of their carefree teenage lifestyle. The next song "Next Time You See Johnny" (from 1989's Another Friday Night ) deals with Johnny and Jeannie separated and Johnny left Jeannie with their son. The son feels hurt since his father left. Both "The Party's Over" and "Next Time You See Johnny" were made into music videos. The final track, the title song of 1992's Fire of Forgiveness , gives the listener some resolution as Johnny looks back in his life. Marks describes the Johnny and Jeannie series as "everything John Mellencamp didn't tell you about Jack and Diane." Marks recorded his 1987 album Make It Right with the title song becoming a Top 10 hit on the Christian radio charts. From that album, the track "Say a Prayer for Me Tonight" was inspired by a true story of a young man who meets Marks after a concert for counseling and asks Marks to pray for him. The young man committed suicide a few days later. 1992's Fire of Forgiveness continues the theme of family-oriented issues from his 1989 album Another Friday Night . Marks co-wrote many songs with his then-wife Pamela Marks. They divorced in 1997. Marks died of a heart attack on October 31, 2018. • David Meece

David Meece (born May 26, 1952) is an American contemporary Christian musician who enjoyed success in the mid-1980s, and into the early 2010s, with more than thirty Top 10 hits including several No. 1 songs. Meece was raised in Humble, Texas, with an abusive and alcoholic father. Meece found solace in playing piano, and by his mid-teens he was touring in Europe and the United States. Meece went on to study music at the Peabody Conservatory of Music where he met his wife Debbie, who played viola. While attending Baltimore, Maryland's Peabody Institute, he experienced a religious conversion, and devoted his life to Jesus. Meece became a youth pastor, and began writing songs reflecting his Christian beliefs, adding classical influences with pop melodies. Meece came to the attention of the Christian music label Myrrh Records, a division of Word Records and in 1976 they released his debut album, David . Meece would release ten albums between 1976 and 2002, becoming a major figure in the Christian music industry. Meece is perhaps best known for his song "We Are the Reason", which has been recorded by more than 200 other artists, and sung in several languages. Meece worked with Canadian singer, songwriter and producer Gino Vannelli in 1986 on two songs for his compilation album Chronology and 1987's Candle in the Rain. Possibly due to his conservatory training, Meece uses pieces of classical piano works as intros or settings for many of his songs. For example, in the song "This Time" from the album Learning to Trust , the opening section of the song (as well as the bridge and ending tag) is from Frédéric Chopin's "Étude Op. 10, No. 12" in C minor. The introductory melody for "You Can Go," from the 1985 album 7 , is taken from the "Two-Part Invention No. 13" in A minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. Also, the song "Falling Down" from his album Count the Cost is based on a sonata by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In November 2012, Meece was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for his body of work by the Artists Music Guild. • Benny Hester

Benny Ray Hester (born May 3, 1948) is an American musician, singer, songwriter and recording artist. He is perhaps best known for his CCM songs "When God Ran" and "Nobody Knows Me Like You," and for producing the groundbreaking tween/teen music-driven sketch comedy and dance television series Roundhouse on Nickelodeon. Hester received a television Cable Ace Award for the song "I Can Dream" and a collection of nominations for writing and producing a featured original song for each weekly episode of Roundhouse during its successful four-year run. He has written and recorded more than 25 number one and top ten songs. Hester's recording of his song "When God Ran" touched the consciousness of Christians worldwide, and is one of the longest running number one songs in contemporary Christian music history, number one for 13 weeks, and the number three song in the 60-year history of Word Records. "When God Ran" continues to be rerecorded by artists in many languages and musical genres, including adult contemporary, pop, rock, R&B, alternative, and Southern Gospel, making it to the top of the charts repeatedly. The title track from his third album, Nobody Knows Me Like You, reached number one on the Christian Music chart and became the first contemporary Christian music song to break the Billboard Top 50 Adult Contemporary chart, debuting at number 44 on November 7, 1981 and peaking at number 41 three weeks later, spending a total of nine weeks. Hester's first contemporary Christian music singles, "Jesus Came Into My Life" and "Be a Receiver," were breakthrough recordings for radio, blurring the lines between pop, rock, and inspirational music, and becoming the first contemporary pop rock songs to be universally accepted and widely played across all Christian Radio formats. His 1978 self-titled second album Benny Hester, re-released in 1983 as Be a Receiver, influenced the burgeoning contemporary Christian music scene, and ranks among the first "Contemporary Christian Music" albums as the musical landscape shifted with the end of the Jesus Music era and the birth of the industry known as contemporary Christian music.
