- Stand By the Power (1982)
Stand By the Power is the 27th studio album by the Christian music vocal group The Imperials , released in 1982 on DaySpring/Word Records. The album is produced by Bill Schnee. This is the first album to feature vocalist Paul Smith as the new lead singer, replacing Russ Taff after being with the group since 1976. While promoting an Imperials concert at Baylor University in Waco, Texas where he was a student, Smith gave Armond Morales a tape of his music. When Morales learned that Taff was leaving, he called Smith. Prior to Smith joining the group, he released two albums independently in the late 1970s. Smith co-wrote five songs on this album and The Imperials also covered the Kerry Livgren song "How Can You Live" from his 1980 album Seeds of Change . It is the first time that The Imperials track is a rock tune, even pre-dating their 1987 release This Year's Model . Stand By the Power peaked at number two on the Billboard Top Inspirational Albums chart. In 1983, The Imperials won Group of the Year at the 14th GMA Dove Awards. Christian has produced albums that have been nominated for nine and won four Grammy Awards. He has also been nominated for seven Gospel Music Association Dove Awards as an artist, songwriter, and producer, winning five. He has also released sixteen other albums as a solo artist. Throughout his career, he has written music for many major TV sports events such as the Super Bowl, NCAA finals, The Masters, Olympics, NFL Today, US Open, and many more. As a member of the trio of Cotton, Lloyd & Christian, put together by Mike Curb in the early 1970s, he enjoyed two hits on the Billboard adult contemporary chart on 20th Century Records. The group performed on Dick Clark's American Bandstand and Midnight Special . As a solo artist he performed on The Merv Griffin Show , Solid Gold , and was a judge on Star Search . Christian also played guitar with Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, and the Wayne Newton band. As a record producer, he is best known for starting Amy Grant's music career by signing her at age 16 to his production company, and calling Myrrh Records executive Stan Moser, to advise he was making an album with Grant as part of a long-term production agreement Christian had signed with Myrrh Records. Christian produced her first album and acted as executive producer for her second, handing over production duties to his college friend Brown Bannister. He owned her songs until 1997 when they were sold to Gaylord Entertainment. As the first artist signed to Boardwalk Records owned by Neil Bogart, with Bob Gaudio (Four Seasons) producing, he recorded "I Want You, I Need You," which peaked at No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1981 and reached the No. 8 on Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart. "I Want You, I Need You" was a number one song in some countries outside the U.S. Television actress Cheryl Ladd sings back-up on the song along with many other artists on the album including Christopher Cross, Nigel Olsson, Frankie Valli, Dann Huff, Tommy Funderburk, Bill Champlin, Paul Jackson, Amy Holland, and Robbie Patton. Other artists on Boardwalk were Ringo Starr, Joan Jett, Mike Love (Beach Boys), and Night Ranger. Robert Kardashian (the Kardashians' father) was his best friend, manager and was responsible for Chris signing with Boardwalk Records. A second hit, a medley of the 1968 Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell Motown songs "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By" sung with Amy Holland, hit No. 21 on the Adult Contemporary chart and No. 88 on the Hot 100 in 1982. Also in 1981, Christian launched his own label Home Sweet Home Records. On that label he signed and produced albums for White Heart , Steve Archer, Mark Heard, Dan Peek, B.J. Thomas, Eric Champion, Rick Riso, Luke Garrett, Marilyn McCoo and others. In 1992, he founded HSH Educational Media with his brother Brad. He executive produced and wrote the music for the children's series Gerbert , which aired on PBS and ABC Family (now Freeform) for over 10 years. His company continues to own and license the Gerbert shows and music. The Gerbert TV series won an ACE award for Best Pre-School Show. Christian purchased The Studios at Las Colinas in 1992 with partner Steve Jarchow. Ross Perot Jr. bought Jarchow's interest in 1993. Christian and Perot purchased the acreage around the Studios Complex selling their interest in the studio and the remaining land to Fox Sports Southwest in 2003. Christian was CEO of World Digital Media Group and YMC Records, a joint venture by Radio Shack, Dish Network, and Sirius Radio, until May 2007. In 2015, he became the vice- chairman and managing partner for the WNBA team Dallas Wings. Christian was inducted into the West Texas Music Hall of Fame, as well as the Christian Music Hall of Fame in 2007. He is listed among the Distinguished Alumni of Abilene Christian University (class of 1973). Christian's family was one of the founders of The Covenant School in Dallas. Christian currently lives in Dallas, Texas with his wife Shanon Smith. In 2019, Christian published his memoirs entitled A Grandmother's Prayer - Moments in a Musical Life . - Focus (1989)
Focus is the tenth studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Chris Christian , originally released on November 7, 1989 by Home Sweet Home/Word Records. Christian produced and arranged the album himself. Two years after his 1987 release Higher Ways , Christian returns with an album that's about parent/child relationships with its lead single "Focus On the Child," as well as three other tracks dealing with the same subject. The song was Christian's last charted song on the Christian AC chart. It also contains a track titled "The Man Behind the Man" as a tribute to former Dallas Cowboys head coach Tom Landry and features Gerry Beckley of the soft rock duo America. Christian country artist Bruce Carroll provides guest vocals on "(Don't Blame It On) The Ones You Love." The album's sound is more adult contemporary than Higher Ways , which is contemporary pop with a Top 40 sound. On the CD cover, Christian appears with his wife Shanon and their three children, Courtney, Casey Noel and Preston, in an ode to painter and illustrator Norman Rockwell as they are at a 1950's era soda shop. In the bottom chair where Casey Noel is sitting is a doll of Gerbert, which is based on a children's television program of the same name that Christian did the music for and is produced by Home Sweet Home Educational Media. - Phil Keaggy (1998)
Phil Keaggy is the 20th self-titled solo album by Christian singer/songwriter/ guitarist Phil Keaggy . It was released on September 16, 1998 by Myrrh/Word Records. The album was produced by Keaggy and Tom Laune. Phil Keaggy is Keaggy's first full vocal album since 1995's True Believer but without the slick production style. He wanted to recapture the live organic sound of his rock and roll albums, Phil Keaggy and Sunday's Child , Find Me in These Fields and Crimson and Blue . Although Keaggy has retained some of True Believer 's adult contemporary sound, there are some Beatle-esqe influences on some of the tracks. The lead single "Days Like You" received some considerable airplay and was his final Top 20 hit on Christian radio but was drowned by the influx of younger artists like Rebecca St. James , Point of Grace , DC Talk and Third Day. Geri Bobeck, Keaggy's sister, contributed her songwriting on two tracks: "My Unspoken Words" and "Tender Love." The tracks "Beneath the Blood-Stained Lintel" and "Quite Suddenly" were inspired by author Harry A. Ironside's book The Continual Burnt Offering . Keaggy also does a cover of the 1988 Sheila Walsh track "Jesus Loves the Church" to close the album. Phil Keaggy debuted and peaked at number 32 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. All three play electric, acoustic and bass guitars and amplifiers along with musicians Chris Kent on bass and Ken Lewis on drums and percussion providing the rhythm section. - Phil Keaggy
Philip Tyler Keaggy (born March 23, 1951 in Youngstown, Ohio) is an American acoustic and electric guitarist and vocalist who has released more than 55 albums and contributed to many more recordings in both the contemporary Christian music and mainstream markets. He is a seven-time recipient of the GMA Dove Award for Instrumental Album of the Year, and was twice nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album. He has frequently been listed as one of the world's top-two "finger-style" and "finger-picking" guitarists by Guitar Player Magazine readers' polls, and due to his complex and virtuosic playing, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He played in several bands in Ohio in the mid-1960s and eventually formed the band Glass Harp with friend John Sferra in 1968. He became a Christian shortly after his mother's death around Valentine's Day of 1970 and his newfound faith infused all three of the Glass Harp recordings on Decca Records. He left the group in August of 1972 to embark on a solo career (although he has since reunited with Glass Harp for several concerts and recording projects). He recorded his first solo album What A Day in 1973, but it wasn't released until June of 1974 . During that period, he married his wife Bernadette and toured with Love Song. His next solo album, Love Broke Thru , didn't arrive until two years later in 1976. During that time, he toured and recorded with other Jesus Music pioneers such as 2nd Chapter of Acts , Honeytree and Paul Clark & Friends. Over the coming decades, Keaggy would continue to record and tour, as well as contributing his unmistakable guitar work to hundreds of recordings. Keaggy also first started collaborating with fellow CCM singer - songwriter and long-time friend Randy Stonehill in the mid-1970s , often appearing in each other's albums either as singing vocal duets, songwriting or both and have performed in the studio and in live concert performances.
