- The Ballads of Bob Carlisle (1997)
The Ballads of Bob Carlisle is a 1997 compilation album of the Christian rock band Allies featuring Bob Carlisle , released on Word Records. Released at the height of Carlisle's success with his hit title song and album Butterfly Kisses and just weeks after Sparrow released the single disc compilation Collection , this collection features 11 songs of ballads and slow songs when Carlisle was the lead singer of Allies, taken from their Word releases from 1987 to 1992. Also included is the Carlisle solo track "Teach Me How" from the 1987 various artists album Voices . The Ballads of Bob Carlisle is currently out of print and is not available digitally. I put together a playlist of the track listings on this collection when it was originally released. The only exception is the track "Can't Stop the River" from the Allies album The River . The track was listed at 9:06 because the instrumental intro was omitted at the beginning. In its place is the full-length 10:31 song with the intro intact. - Man With a Mission (1992)
Man With a Mission is the sixth and final studio album by the Christian rock band Allies , released on April 21, 1992 by DaySpring/Word Records. The album was written, produced and arranged by Bob Carlisle and Randy Thomas. After the departures of original players, Matthew Chapman (bass guitar) and Jim Erickson (drums), Allies' remaining members Carlisle and Thomas reformed the band with new studio musicians: Mark Hill (bass guitar), Scott Sheriff (keyboards) and Brian Fullen (drums). Man With a Mission pretty much was a return to their contemporary pop/rock sound of earlier releases but still retaining some of the arena rock sounds of Long Way From Paradise and The River . Their final Christian radio songs were the title song, "In My Life," Grand Facade" and "Feather In Your Cap." Man With a Mission debuted and peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. After the album was released and a short farewell tour, Allies disbanded. Carlisle focused on his solo career and released his self-titled debut album in 1993. Thomas co-wrote songs with Carlisle throughout the 1990s and in 1997, formed the short-lived Christian rock duo Identical Strangers with vocalist Andy Denton and released only one album. Carlisle and Thomas would reunite the band with its original line-up and toured on occasion through the 2000s and 2010s. Track listing All songs written by Bob Carlisle and Randy Thomas. 1. - The River (1990)
The River is the fifth studio album by the Christian rock band Allies , released on November 14, 1990 by DaySpring/Word Records. The album was written, produced and arranged by Bob Carlisle and Randy Thomas. This is the last album to feature long-time players Matthew Chapman on bass and Jim Erickson on drums. The River continues in the same vein as their previous album Long Way From Paradise . It is also thematic with its two tracks: the album opener "Take Me to the River" and the 10 1/2-minute "Can't Stop the River." The latter track speaks of the moving of the Holy Spirit as a raging and irresistible flood. You may be able to reject the calling of the Holy Spirit on your life, but you can’t keep Him from calling. Allies rock out on "Rock n' Roll Angel," "Burden Down" and the 1950s-styled "Carried Away" and slow down on ballads like "Someone to Turn To" and "Come to the Family." The River is the first Allies album not to chart on the Billboard Top Christian Albums. Track listing All songs written by Bob Carlisle and Randy Thomas. 1. Take Me to the River -4:44 2. - Long Way From Paradise (1989)
Long Way From Paradise is the fourth studio album by the Christian rock band Allies , released on February 21, 1989 by DaySpring/Word Records. The album was produced and arranged by Bob Carlisle and Randy Thomas. It is their second album on Word's DaySpring label and Long Way From Paradise was considered Allies' best album and masterpiece. Starting with their previous release Shoulder to Shoulder , Allies would have much chart success with both Christian radio and Christian Rock charts. The album showcased Carlisle's strong vocals and Thomas' guitar solos on rock tracks like the title song and "Devil Is a Liar." The album also balances with some pop ("All Day, All Night," "Trust in God"), ballads ("Take Me Back," "Walk With Me Silent") and blues ("Christian Man"). The final track is the much-covered ballad "Crying In the Chapel." Its most famous recording was made by Elvis Presley in his 1967 gospel album How Great Thou Art . A music video was made for the track. Both Carlisle and Thomas wrote the other 10 songs on the album. Long Way From Paradise peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. In 2001, the album was named as one of the 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music by CCM Magazine and listed at number 69. NOTE: While Long Way From Paradise was released, Carlisle and Thomas experienced some success on the mainstream country music charts as songwriters as they wrote the number one Billboard Country Songs hit "Why'd You Come in Here Lookin' Like That" for Dolly Parton on her 1989 album White Limozeen . - Shoulder to Shoulder (1987)
Shoulder to Shoulder is the third studio album by the Christian rock band Allies . It was released on November 10, 1987 by DaySpring/Word Records. After two albums on Light Records, Allies signed with Word Record for their next album. Shoulder to Shoulder was considered a commercial breakthrough. Gone is the military wear they wore from those past releases and tour. The band showed themselves as they really are by wearing normal clothes and not costumes. The album was benefited by its radio singles "How Much Love" and "It's Never Easy." Both of those songs made their first appearances on the Christian AC chart, in addition to the Christian CHR chart. The band made two music videos to promote the album with "It's Never Easy" and "Voice of the Spirit." Bob Carlisle and Randy Thomas wrote and produced the album. The band brought in musician Kenny Williams to replace Sam Scott on keyboards. Even though Williams appeared on the album jacket cover with the other band members, he did not appear in the two music videos and left Allies after making Shoulder to Shoulder . Allies became a four-piece band starting with this release. In early 1988, the album began its chart climb on the Billboard Top Christian Albums and peaked at number 20. In 1989, the music video of "It's Never Easy" was nominated for a Dove Award for Short Form Music Video of the Year. Track listing All songs by Bob Carlisle and Randy Thomas. 1. The album was produced by Dino Elefante and Randy Thomas. The album deals with social issues from a spiritual perspective. The band took the name at face value as the group appeared on the album jacket cover in military fatigues. Their second single "Don't Run Away" climbed to number 9 on the Christian CHR chart. Allies climbed to number 24 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. The album was recorded at Pakaderm Studios in Los Alamitos, California and was mixed by Dino Elefante.
