- Sail On (1977)
Sail On is the 22nd studio album by the Christian music vocal group The Imperials . It is their first album to be released on Word Records' DaySpring label in 1977 and the first to feature two new vocalists: Russ Taff on tenor and lead and David Will on baritone and vocals, after the departures of Sherman Andrus and Terry Blackwood and the release of their previous album Just Because . Andrus and Blackwood went on to form the Christian music duo Andrus, Blackwood and Company and released their debut album that same year. Taff and Will joined The Imperials in 1976 along with long-time members Armond Morales and Jim Murray and got together with Gary S. Paxton as producer and recorded an album that remained unreleased until 2006. Those unreleased songs would later be released as The Lost Album . Paxton was let go by Word Records due to creative differences and Word called in Chris Christian to produce an entirely new album and Sail On was the result. In 1978, The Imperials won their second Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance, Contemporary or Inspirational for Sail On at the 20th Grammy Awards and even performed the title song on the telecast, plus at the 10th GMA Dove Awards, they were named Male Group of the Year. The Imperials' first chart appearance was on CCM Magazine 's contemporary hit radio chart in August 1978 with the title song climbing to number three a couple of months later. Sail On has never been released on CD but it is available to stream and for download music purchasing. Track listing 1. Water Grave (Steve Chapman) -3:55 2. - The Turning (1987)
The Turning is the fourth and final studio album released under Leslie Phillips . It was released in the spring 1987 and her final album on Myrrh/Word Records. The album marks the first time Phillips worked with producer T-Bone Burnett. The two married soon after the release of this album, and Burnett would go on to produce more albums for the singer under her current name Sam Phillips. The Turning stands out as a turning point in Phillips' career as a singer and songwriter; on one side, the cheerful, upbeat pop-rock albums that she recorded in the early 1980s, and, on the other, the quirky 60's music influenced rock and folk albums, with a much darker and more poetic tone lyrically. This album was listed at number 8 in the book CCM Presents: The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music by CCM Magazine. Even though radio singles like "Libera Me" and "Answers Don't Come Easy" were moderate hits, The Turning was not commercially successful. The album peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. Track listings All songs written by Leslie Phillips, except where noted. 1. River of Love (T-Bone Burnett) -2:46 2. The album peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Top Inspirational Albums chart in early 1985. In 1991, Dancing with Danger was re-issued on CD with remastered remix versions of the title song and "I Won't Let It Come Between Us," replacing the original mix recordings and the solo recording of "By My Spirit" that was originally featured in a 1984 various artists compilation album By My Spirit: A Musical Gathering of Praise as a bonus track. - The Loving Kind (1998)
The Loving Kind is the fifth studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Cindy Morgan . It was released on March 10, 1998 by Word Records. The Loving Kind is a concept album that focuses on the last eight days of Jesus Christ's life on earth, from the last supper to the betrayal to the trial to the crucifixtion and resurrection. The album is produced by Brent Bourgeois and Craig Hansen, the same production team responsible for Morgan's previous album Listen . The album was released in time for the Easter season. For the first time on this album, no songs were charted on the Christian CHR chart. All singles charted strictly on the Christian AC radio chart. The album's lead single, "Take My Life," climbed up to number one on the Christian AC chart. Also known as Mary Magdalene's song, it is sung from her perspective as she sings about her love and devotion to Him. Other song highlights include the title song, about Peter's denial of not knowing Christ and his betrayal, "Devil Man" is about Judas' guilt of getting Christ arrested and selling him to the Jewish leasers for greed, "Alive and Well," co-written with Michael W. Smith and Andrew Ramsay, is about the resurrection of Christ. Smith plays the piano on the track. "Praise the King" is a simple worship song. Prior to making The Loving Kind , the songs were inspired by Morgan's trip to Jerusalem and walking the same streets where Jesus walked. The album peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart and in 1999, Morgan was nominated for a Dove Award for Songwriter of the Year. No music videos were made for this album, as she did on her previous releases. Track listing All songs written by Cindy Morgan, except where noted. 1. In the Garden -2:42 2. The March -3:58 3. - Listen (1996)
Listen is the fourth studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Cindy Morgan , released on October 29, 1996 by Word Records. Listen was a departure from her dance/pop sound of Morgan's previous albums and moving towards a full adult contemporary sound in the singer - songwriter vein. Morgan also worked with new producers Brent Bourgeois and Craig Hansen to let her stretch vocally and lyrically to give it a band feel. In addition to Morgan playing the piano on the album, she also worked with studio musicians including producer Bourgeois. The title song was released as the lead single and topped the Christian AC chart. It's the first time Morgan topped that chart by herself, whereas she previously had number one songs on the Christian CHR chart. Four years earlier, Morgan hit number one on the Christian AC chart with the duet track "Somewhere Within the Heart" with Carman . The lyrics to "Listen" were written by Morgan's father Cova Morgan in the 1970s. A music video was made for the second single "The Master's Hand." The video is, in some ways, a sequel to her previous video "I Will Be Free" (from 1993's A Reason to Live ). Morgan wrote all the songs on the album. Listen was ranked at number 81 by CCM Magazine in their 2001 book The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music . In 1997, Morgan released a concert video on VHS titled Listen...The Concert: An Evening with Cindy Morgan . It was recorded live at the Caffe Milano in Nashville, Tennessee with her band, members of the Nashville String Machine and backing vocalists. It was nominated for a Dove Award for Long Form Music Video of the Year in 1998. The album debuted and peaked at number 32 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. - Under the Waterfall (1995)
Under the Waterfall is the third studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Cindy Morgan , released in the spring of 1995 by Word Records. The album was produced by Mark Hammond. The title of the album is taken from the track "Sweet Days of Grace." It is one of the first seven tracks on the album in which its theme is about the sweet embrace of God. Tracks 8 -11's theme is about the pathway of pain and tracks 12 and 13 are on love's refrain. Those three themes make up Under the Waterfall . The gospel-themed lead single and music video "I'll Stand" features CCM recording artist -songwriter Michael W. Smith on the piano. The album's overall sound is more adult contemporary but still has some of the upbeat pop/R&B sound from her previous releases. Even though she had songs on the Christian CHR chart, Christian AC started to embrace this album, particularly on the songs "Reaching With His Love" and "I Know You." Under the Waterfall climbed up to number 22 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. In 1996, Morgan was nominated for a Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the Year. A Reason to Live continues the success of her debut album Real Life with more dance pop, R&B and now incorporating some adult contemporary tracks like "Reaching In" and "I Will Be Free." "I Will Be Free" is a ballad and immensely personal to Morgan as well as a signature song and in 1995 won the Dove Award for Short Form Music Video of the Year. "I Will Be Free" was named as one of the 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music by CCM Magazine in 2006 at number 89. The album also garnered Morgan three more number one songs on the Christian CHR chart with "Picture Me in Paradise," "We Can Live Together" and "The Days of Innocence."
