  • Michael W. Smith 2 (1984)

Michael W. Smith 2 is the second studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Michael W. Smith , released in 1984 on Reunion Records. The album climbed to number four on the Billboard  Top Inspirational Albums chart. Once again, Smith produced the album himself. The singles "I Am Sure" and "Hosanna" both went Top 10. Smith won his first Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance, Male for Michael W. Smith 2 and won his first Dove Award for Songwriter of the Year, both in 1985. Smith made his first music video for the track "A Way" to promote the album. Fellow Christian artist and friend Amy Grant  co-wrote two songs with Smith; "Restless Heart" (Grant also provided guest vocals) and "All I Needed to Say" (Grant and her first husband Gary Chapman  provided backing vocals). In 1985, Smith released a concert video on VHS entitled Michael W. Smith - In Concert . It was taped at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia during the Friends Tour and features Amy and Gary as special guests. Smith performed a new track "I Know" from the tour and, at the time, was released as a non-album radio single in 1986 and became a number one Christian CHR hit. The song was included on both the 1987 live album The Live Set and the 1993 limited edition 2 CD compilation box set The Wonder Years . Track listing 1. A Way (Michael W. • Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus (1997)

Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus is the sixteenth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released on February 18, 1997 by Word Records. Petra Praise 2 is the second praise album and follow up to 1989's Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out . The album was released amidst some major line-up changes in the band, and it features contributions of several musicians. It's the first album to feature Lonnie Chapin on bass guitar, who would become the band's full-time bassist until 2001. The music is a mixture of traditional and original praise songs with a rock style. It is considered to be more diverse musically than the band's first, straight forward hard rock, praise album. Most of the original songs were penned by band founder Bob Hartman, except for the song "Song of Moses," which was written by former Petra keyboardist Jim Cooper and former White Heart guitarist Brian Wooten. The title song is originally a cover from a 1991 various artists album Portrait of a Spirit featuring artists that were on the Pakaderm label that John and Dino Elefante were running and were credited as The Heard. This new version of "We Need Jesus" features vocals by Petra lead singer John Schlitt, album co-producer and fellow CCM singer and songwriter John Elefante and Lou Gramm, lead singer of the rock band Foreigner. Petra Praise 2 peaked at number 2 on the Top Christian Albums and number 155 on the Billboard 200 Albums charts. Petra was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album and won a Dove Award for Praise and Worship Album of the Year at the 29th GMA Dove Awards. Track listing 1. • No Doubt (1995)

No Doubt is the fifteenth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released on August 26, 1995 by Word Records. John and Dino Elefante return to the production chairs on their first album producing since 1991's Unseen Power . The tone of the album is more pop-oriented than any previous release featuring John Schlitt. Most of the rock songs lack the driving edge of their previous albums, and the sonic field is no longer flooded with distorted guitars, leaning more toward a calculated, radio-friendly sound. This is also Ronny Cates' final appearance on a Petra album as he would leave after the release of this album. All the guitars in the album were played by founder Bob Hartman. However, since he had quit touring with the band before the release of the album, new guitarist David Linchens was enlisted to travel with the band and appeared in the album art, promotional photos and music videos. This is the only album to feature Jim Cooper. Cooper was a keyboard technician for former keyboardist John Lawry for several years. When Lawry retired, Cooper replaced him for this album. No Doubt debuted and peaked at number 91 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, making their first appearance on the main chart. The album also appears on the Heatseekers Albums chart at number 18 and number 2 on the Top Christian Album chart. Petra won a Dove Award for Rock Album of the Year at the 27th GMA Dove Awards and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album, after winning three previous Grammys. Music videos were made for the songs "Enter In" and "Think Twice" to promote the album. Track listing 1. Enter In (Bob Hartman, Jim Cooper, John Elefante) -5:00 2. • Wake-Up Call (1993)

Wake-Up Call is the fourteenth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released on November 9, 1993 by DaySpring/Word Records. This is their final album to be released on the DaySpring label as future albums will be released directly to Word Records. The album marks a dramatic shift in tone for the band. The sound is more raw, there are fewer driving rock songs, and it concludes with three consecutive ballads. Wake-Up Call also has a change in producer, as Brown Bannister takes over the production duties for this album, thus continuing their arena rock sound. This is also the last time the personnel line-up will change as long-time member and songwriter Bob Hartman and keyboardist John Lawry will leave the group after the release of this album. Hartman will continue to contribute songs for future Petra albums as Hartman announced his retirement from touring as he wanted to spend time with his family. Hartman turned over his administrative duties to lead singer John Schlitt. Future Petra member Jim Cooper co-wrote the song "Praying Man" with Lawry, whom Cooper will replace. Wake-Up Call peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. In 1994, Petra won a Dove Award for Rock Album of the Year at the 25th GMA Dove Awards and in 1995, won their third Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album at the 37th Grammy Awards. Petra released a collection of music videos on VHS titled Wake-Up Call Video Collection featuring music videos for "Midnight Oil" and "Just Reach Out," select music videos from Beyond Belief and Unseen Power , and band interviews. Wake-Up Call  was reissued and remastered on CD with a collectors trading card on July 21, 2023 and on 180-gram yellow vinyl on January 2, 2024 by Girder Music and Word/Curb Records. • Unseen Power (1991)

Unseen Power is the thirteenth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released on November 19, 1991 by DaySpring/Word Records. The album was produced by John and Dino Elefante. Despite the fall 1991 release, the radio singles in both Rock and AC/CHR did not start rolling out until the beginning of 1992. Petra was still coming off the success of their 1990 album Beyond Belief . Bob Hartman has stated that he and the producers, the Elefante brothers, intentionally chose to move in directions they were not instinctively inclined to go. Their arena rock sound continues in songs like "Destiny," "Who's On the Lord's Side" and "Ready, Willing and Able." The song "Dance" features members of the Christian hard rock band Guardian singing backing vocals, giving it a Guns-n-Roses sound and "Hand On My Heart" is a slow ballad with an R&B feel. Unseen Power topped the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart in 1992. In 1993, Petra won their second Grammy Award for Best Rock/Contemporary Gospel Album at the 35th Grammy Awards and their rock song "Destiny" won Rock Recorded Song of the Year at the 24th GMA Dove Awards. Petra also released a companion video on VHS called Petra - Backstage Pass featuring music videos from the Unseen Power album as well as behind the scenes access with the band and interviews. Unseen Power was reissued and remastered on CD with a collectors trading card on July 21, 2023 and on 180-gram blue vinyl on January 2, 2024 by Girder Music and Word/Curb Records. • Washes Whiter Than (1979)

Washer Whiter Than is the third studio album by the Christian rock band Petra . Released in 1979, amidst major line-up changes that saw all but one of the founding band members leave. It was the first album to be released on the newly formed Star Song Records label. Word Records would distribute this and future releases up until 1986, which will then be distributed by Capitol Christian Music Group. Washes Whiter Than was produced by George Atwell. The album features a more mellow style when compared to the band's two previous efforts. Part of the reason for this is that the group wanted to get away from the controversy surrounding the hard rock style of their earlier releases. The softer material on this record achieved greater airplay on Christian radio stations than had their previous albums, particularly on the song "Why Should the Father Bother?" giving them their first Top 10 hit on the Christian radio charts. The song "Yahweh Love" has a little bit of a disco style. This is also the first release to feature singer Greg X. Volz as an official band member. Musician Rob Frazier, who later went on to have a solo career, is also featured as lead vocalist in several of the songs, as well as playing most of the instrumentation together with founder Bob Hartman. NOTE: the album was reissued by Star Song Records in 1988 on a 2-on-1 CD package together with 1981's Never Say Die . The songs "(Couldn't Find Love) Without You" and "Magic Words" were cut from this edition to save space, but on this one, you will hear the entire album with the YouTube link posted below. On another note, Washes Whiter Than was reissued and remastered on CD in 2021 and on a clear vinyl with blue splatter in 2025 by Girder Music. Released as part of the Legends of Rock series, it is the first time that the entire album is available on CD with all 10 songs. The CD comes with a collectors trading card and on vinyl, it comes with a 12 x 18 poster. Track listing All songs written by Bob Hartman, except where noted. 1. I'm Thankful -2:55 2. • Never Say Die (1981)

Never Say Die is the fourth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , originally released in 1981 on Star Song Records. "The Coloring Song" was a radio hit for the band, giving them their first number one hit on the Christian AC chart and sales were higher for this album than their previous releases. This album set the stage for Petra's success in the 1980s and their next few albums duplicated much of the formula, as well as repeated the "guitar" theme on the album cover. The track "Killing My Old Man" was originally intended and recorded for their 1977 album Come and Join Us , but Word Records dropped the original track, so the song was re-recorded for this album. The album is the first to exclusively feature Greg X. Volz on lead vocals and new members Mark Kelly on bass guitar and John Slick on keyboards. Star Song Records later re-issued the album on a single CD in 1988 with 1979's Washes Whiter Than . The former had two tracks cut for space; this album was included in full. Never Say Die is their first charted album on the Billboard Top Inspirational Albums chart, climbing to number 16. The album was produced by Jonathan David Brown and it's the first of five albums Brown will produce up to the mid 1980s. On November 19, 2021, Never Say Die was reissued and remastered on CD by Girder Music and released as part of the Legends of Rock series. It is the first time that Never Say Die was made available on CD with all 10 songs by itself. The CD also comes with a collectors trading card. • More Power to Ya (1982)

More Power to Ya is the fifth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released in 1982 on Star Song Records. This was the first album to feature Louie Weaver as the official drummer. It also features the vocals of bassist Mark Kelly on the song "Disciple." "Stand Up" gave Petra their first Top Ten hit on the Christian Rock chart while the title song peaked at the top of the Christian radio chart and was ranked at number 72 in CCM Magazine 's 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music , while the album ranked at number 98 in the 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music . More Power to Ya peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Top Inspirational Albums chart, produced by Jonathan David Brown. In 2012, More Power to Ya was reissued on CD and digital for its 30 anniversary with three live tracks from their 1986 album Captured in Time and Space . NOTE: on the track "Judas' Kiss," the song's intro includes the phrase "What are you lookin' for the devil for when you oughta be lookin' for the Lord?" and was played backwards. Petra used a technique called "backmasking." According to many people, backmasking was being used in rock music to include hidden satanic messages. This caused a backlash from the Christian community against the genre. In an attempt to divert people obsessed with this from it, Petra used the technique with the intent to send a message. In 2022, More Power to Ya  was reissued and remastered for a limited time on CD (with a collectors trading card), cassette tape and on teal blue vinyl (with a 12 x 18 poster) by Girder Music and Universal Music Group. • Beat the System (1985)

Beat the System is the seventh studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released on January 16, 1985 by Star Song Records. The album was produced by Jonathan David Brown. It is the first album to feature John Lawry on keyboards, replacing John Slick after being with the group since 1981. Lawry joined towards the end of the recording process; his contributions were limited to some overdubs on the songs "Beat the System," "Clean" and "Adonai." Most of the keyboards on the album, as well as all the bass and drum parts, were performed by session musician Carl Marsh. Bassist Mark Kelly and drummer Louie Weaver were not involved in the recording, only touring. Fairlight programmer Rhett Lawrence added some elements to "Clean" and "Hollow Eyes." Carl Marsh's programming, under the direction of producer Brown, veered the sound of the album more in the synth-rock genre of music. A music video was made for the title song featuring the new Petra line-up of Greg X. Volz, Bob Hartman, Weaver, Kelly and Lawry. Beat the System peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart, giving the group their second number 1 album. Petra earned their second Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group for Beat the System . NOTE: this the last album to feature lead vocalist Greg X. Volz as he left the group after finishing the Beat the System Tour and started a solo career in 1986. John Schlitt, former lead singer of the mainstream rock group Head East, would be the new lead singer for their next album. This is the second time Petra has covered "God Gave Rock and Roll to You" for this album. The first time was on their 1977 album Come and Join Us . In 2022, Beat the System was reissued and remastered for a limited time on CD (with a collectors trading card), cassette tape and on royal purple vinyl (with a 12 x 18 poster) by Girder Music and Universal Music Group. This is the first Petra album to be distributed by Sparrow/Star Song Distribution, later renamed Capitol Christian Music Group. This Means War! topped the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart with the title song and "He Came, He Saw, He Conquered" doing well on the Christian Rock chart and ballads like "Don't Let Your Heart be Hardened" and "I Am Available" making Top 10 on the Christian CHR and AC charts. • On Fire! (1988)

On Fire! is the tenth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released in 1988 on Star Song Records. Produced by John and Dino Elefante. This is Petra's final studio album on the Star Song label that they've called home since 1979. This is the first album to feature new bass guitar player Ronny Cates, who replaced Mark Kelly after being with the group since 1981. Cates would remain with Petra until 1995. With his addition to the line-up, the band started their more stable period in terms of line-up. John Schlitt, Bob Hartman, Cates, John Lawry and Louie Weaver would remain together for seven years and six albums. On Fire! 's lyrics continue their theme of spiritual warfare as heard on their 1987 album This Means War! with metaphors making reference to military subtexts like "Mine Field" and "Defector." The band also tackles issues such as homelessness ("Homeless Few") and other personal and social issues. On Fire! peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. Beyond Belief is the twelfth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released on June 20, 1990 by DaySpring/Word Records. The album was produced by John and Dino Elefante. As of late 2011, this is the band's most successful album both critically and commercially, and it is considered by most to be the peak of their discography. Prior to the release of the album, Petra released a short film also called Beyond Belief . The film is produced and directed by Stephen Yake and written by Yake, Tom Newman, Andrea Jobe, and Jeff Bates. Six music video were made: "Creed," "Armed and Dangerous," "Love," "Beyond Belief," Seen and Not Heard" and "I Am On The Rock." The film follows Chad Warren, a young senior in high school, who must face the illness of his brother, David during the summer. While David is diagnosed with cancer, Chad must compete in a huge track and field competition to get a scholarship at Angelo State. David also insists on Chad mending his relationship with their father, who recently walked out on their family. The short film was nominated for a Dove Award for Long Form Music Video.
