- Charlie Peacock (1986)
Charlie Peacock is the self-titled second solo album by singer -songwriter Charlie Peacock . Released in the fall of 1986, it was Peacock's final album on the Exit Records label and distributed by Island Records. This was supposed to be Peacock's breakthrough album that was supposed to solidify his secular presence. Unfortunately that didn't work out. A&M Records bailed on the album and it eventually ended up on Island Records. Island was unable to properly promote the album so it didn't have any secular success. One of the stranger production ideas was to include a new recording of "Lie Down on the Grass" from his 1984 album of the same name . The beats and synth were perfect for the time and the album was easily as good as anything on the radio at the time. A music video was made for the track "Message Boy" in a slightly different remix form from the album version. The album was mainly produced by English record engineer Nigel Gray with Peacock writing and composing the entire album. Charlie Peacock contains the original recording of "Down in the Lowlands." Former Imperials lead singer Russ Taff would cover the song on his 1987 self-titled album . The 1986 recording of "Lie Down in the Grass" would appear on the 30th Anniversary Expanded Edition of Lie Down in the Grass as one of the bonus tracks. Charlie Peacock was remastered in 2020. - Lie Down in the Grass (1984)
Lie Down in the Grass is the first solo album by singer -songwriter Charlie Peacock . It was released in 1984 on Word Records' Exit label. The Exit Records label was specially made from Word Records that featured Christian alternative rock acts like Peacock, The 77's, Vector (from which Peacock was a member before going solo) and many others based in Sacramento, California. From 1982 until 1985, the label's releases were distributed exclusively to the Christian market via Word, Inc. A&M Records handled the mainstream distribution in 1985. In 1986, The album was picked up by Island Records for distribution until Exit Records folded the following year. CCM Magazine ranked Lie Down in the Grass at number 67 in their 2001 book The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music . The album was, in some ways, a head of its time. Featuring musicians from other Exit acts The 77's and Vector (Aaron Smith and Jimmy Abegg, both would go on to play on Rich Mullins ' Ragamuffin Band), Peacock delivered accessible melodies in a sophisticated format that challenged the listener with layers of fun, off-beat surprises. Peacock wrote and produced the entire album himself. Highlights on Lie Down in the Grass include the title track, "One, Two, Three (That's Okay)," "Till You Caught My Eye" and "Love Doesn't Get Better." On the A&M release, new tracks "Young in Heart" and "Love Doesn't Get Better " replace the tracks "Watching Eternity" and "Lost in Translation" from the Exit release. The album was reissued in 1992 by Myrrh Records on CD. In 2014, a 30th anniversary expanded edition of Lie Down in the Grass was released and contains the entire original Exit album and 10 bonus tracks including the two A&M tracks and four different mixes of the title song among others. - Return (1990)
Return is the sixth studio album by the Christian gospel vocal group The Winans , released on April 24, 1990 by Qwest/Warner Bros. Records. Starting with this album it was also the formation of Warner Bros. Gospel/Christian label Warner Alliance. The Winans returned with a more urban contemporary sound with Return with the opening new jack swing track, "It's Time." Featuring the rap intro by musician - producer Teddy Riley, "It's Time" is the title song of the album, in which it addresses the theme of repentance with a specific reference to urban violence. Accompanied by a music video, "It's Time" became the brothers first major mainstream success in the R&B market, climbing up to the Top 5 on the R&B charts and the song topped the Christian CHR chart for 8 weeks. The Winans were the fourth gospel act to top the Christian CHR chart, in which most songs are topped by white acts in Christian radio like Amy Grant , Michael W. Smith and Petra . Other track highlights include "Everyday the Same" featuring harmonica and cameo vocals by Stevie Wonder, " "When You Cry" featuring the saxophone by Kenny G. and "A Friend" featuring Aaron Hall of the R&B group Guy (for which Riley is also a member). Further music videos were made for "A Friend" and "Don't Leave Me." The Winans did face some criticism with this album, particularly with "It's Time" with its new jack swing sound, which most gospel audiences objected and for working with secular musicians and employing worldly sounds like hip-hop and rap. The Winans found that their mainstream connections opened many doors for them in terms of ministry. In 2001, CCM Magazine named this album as one of the "100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music," ranking it at number 61. Return was The Winans' only Gold certified album selling 500,000 copies. The album charted on the following Billboard album charts: #1 Billboard Top Gospel Albums #4 Billboard Top Christian Albums #12 Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums #90 Billboard 200 Albums In 1991, The Winans were the first recipients of a Dove Award in its inaugural category of Rap/Hip Hop/Dance Recorded Song of the Year for "It's Time" and they won a Soul Train Music Award for Best Gospel Album. They were nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. Track listing All songs were written by Marvin Winans, except where noted. 1. It features guest singers that were both released as singles: "Ain't No Need to Worry" with American R&B singer Anita Baker and "Love Has No Color" with singer - songwriter Michael McDonald. - Tomorrow (1984)
Tomorrow is the third studio album by the Christian gospel vocal group The Winans , released in late 1984 by Light Records. The album was produced by Bill Maxwell and Scott V. Smith, with Marvin Winans serving as associate producer. It is considered a breakthrough album due to the title song. It was a successful hit on Christian radio climbing up to the Top 20 and they were one of the many African-American artists, along with Philip Bailey , Leon Patillo and Deniece Williams to be accepted and get airplay when most are only relegated to just Traditional gospel radio. Another highlight track on the album is "Bring Back the Days of Yea and Nay." Marvin wrote nine out of the album's ten songs with the title song co-written by twin brother Carvin. Tomorrow featured songs with arrangements that were built logically on Andraé Crouch's 1970s work. The tracks were played by Crouch's core musicians-Harlen Rogers, Hadley Hockensmith, Justo Almario, Alex Acuña and producer Maxwell-who would become in the Los Angeles jazz circles as Koinonia, and go on to influence the development of a new sound in contemporary jazz on the West Coast. Their Influence gave the album a sound that had much more in common with the post-disco R&B of the early 1980s (pre-Quincy Jones-era Michael Jackson) than it did with the "contemporary" gospel of the day. CCM Magazine named Tomorrow as one of "The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music" in 2001. Tomorrow peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart in early 1985. That same year, The Winans were nominated for a Dove Award for Traditional Gospel Album of the Year and in 1986, they won their first Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group for this album while Marvin Winans won his first solo Grammy for Best Soul Gospel Performance, Male for his self-written track "Bring Back the Days of Yea and Nay" at the 28th Grammy Awards.
