- Fire & Light (1990)
Fire & Light is the seventh solo album by Christian singer - songwriter Chuck Girard . Originally released independently in 1990 on Girard's label Seven Thunders Records, it was distributed in 1991 by Frontline Music Group/Diamante Music Group by way of Asaph Records. Fire & Light served as a companion album to his 1983 release The Name Above All Names in terms of the album's sound which was praise and worship with some upbeat songs. It was Girard's first album of new material in seven years and his first album of the 1990s. The recording of this album was a challenge to him because it is his first album to be recorded digitally. Girard admits that Fire & Light is not his favorite album because of these recording aspects. Despite that, it was also a family affair because Girard's family was involved in the making of this album. Girard's wife Karen co-wrote the opening track "Set the Trumpet to Your Mouth" and Girard's eldest daughter Alisa (before she became a member of ZOEgirl ) provided backing vocals on three tracks: "Blessed In the City," "O Holy Night" (not the Christmas song) and "Lift My Hands." Fire & Light was recorded and funded at Girard's church at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California. It was produced and arranged by Girard and Rob Watson with 12 songs written solely by Girard, except for the tracks "Set the Trumpet to Your Mouth" and "Be Enthroned Oh God" which Girard co-wrote with Wendell Burton. - Chuck Girard
Charles H. Girard (August 27, 1943 – August 11, 2025) was an American musician, considered a pioneer of contemporary Christian music. Born in Los Angeles, California, Girard and his family moved to Santa Rosa, California in his early teens and formed his first band The Castells. The Castells were influential in defining the early 1960s "California sound" and placed a couple of songs in the national charts including "Sacred" peaking at number 20. After three years with The Castells, Girard along with Castells member Joe Kelley, left the group and both were recruited by producer Gary Usher to form the surf rock band The Hondells. The Hondells had a Top 10 hit with their version of The Beach Boys tracks "Little Honda" in 1964. Girard also was involved in other projects and side bands like The Knights and Mr. Gasser and the Weirdos. In the early 1970s Girard was playing gigs in clubs with Tommy Coomes, Jay Truax and Fred Field. After experimentations with LSD and at least one drug bust in Las Vegas, the musicians were reading different spiritual texts when they were invited to what Girard called a Christian commune in Laguna Beach. An invitation to Calvary Chapel, before it became a megachurch, led to all four musicians becoming Christian coverts. Love Song became a house band of sorts at the Chuck Smith-led, counterculture-friendly church. Their 1971 self-titled debut album was considered a masterpiece. CCM Magazine named it as one of the 100 greatest albums in Christian music in 2001. Girard produced the first of a long series of compilation albums on Calvary Church’s Maranatha! Music label, The Everlastin’ Living Jesus Music Concert , although he said he was not credited as such on the album, “because I was told that would be giving the glory to man, not God,” he said. (Producer credits were added on subsequent Maranatha! releases.) Girard and his fiancé Karen were married on November 27, 1971. Love Song then released a second album Final Touch in 1974. It was the final album featuring Girard. In 1975, Girard became a solo artist after leaving Love Song. He wrote and performed the songs "Sometimes Alleluia" and "Rock 'N' Roll Preacher"; both were featured on his debut album Chuck Girard. It also featured the band Ambrosia prominently throughout. Girard in turn was featured on Ambrosia's album Somewhere I've Never Travelled in 1976, although it does not mention as to what role or involvement Girard did on the album. He was the father of Alisa Childers, a member of the former Christian girl group ZOEgirl and Christian apologist. In 2024, Girard was diagnosed with stage IV cancer that had metastasized to his lungs. He was taken off chemotherapy as it was ineffective. Girard died on August 11, 2025, at the age of 81, just two weeks shy of his 82nd birthday. Brother's Keeper is the eighth and final studio album by Christian singer -songwriter Rich Mullins , released on August 1, 1995 by Reunion Records. It is Mullins' final full-length album that he recorded while he was alive. - The Jesus Record (1998)
The Jesus Record is a posthumous album by Christian singer - songwriter Rich Mullins . Released on the Word Records' Myrrh label on July 21, 1998, ten months after Mullins' passing. Produced by Rick Elias. It consists of two discs: The Jesus Demos and The Jesus Record . The Jesus Demos consisted of nine rough demos Mullins recorded for the album at an abandoned church on September 10, 1997, nine days before his death. The songs were meant for a concept album based on the life of Jesus Christ, to be called Ten Songs About Jesus . The Jesus Record was recorded after his death by Mullins' studio band A Ragamuffin Band (with Rick Elias, Aaron Smith, Jimmy Abegg and Mark Robertson, who joined this line-up and toured). Guest vocalists on the album include Amy Grant , Michael W. Smith , Phil Keaggy and Ashley Cleveland. Orchestrations for the album, arranged and conducted by Tom Howard, were recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios. The album ends with the rough demo version of "That Where I Am, There You...," with added instruments and vocals by A Ragamuffin Band, Michael W. Smith and a large choir of family and friends. The last thing heard on the album are the faint sounds of "Nothing But the Blood of Jesus," played by Mullins on the hammered dulcimer. The recording, which was made during a 1997 concert performance in Green Bay, Wisconsin barely made it into the album. Both discs also contain the track "Heaven in His Eyes," which Mullins wrote and performed in 1981 with his band Zion from their album Behold the Man . On the second disc The Jesus Record , it contains an original song "Man of No Reputation" written and performed by Rick Elias. It was originally recorded by veteran Christian singer and former Allies lead singer Bob Carlisle in his second album The Hope of a Man in 1994. The Jesus Record climbed up to number 3 on the Top Christian Albums and number 113 on the Billboard 200 Albums charts. The entire album was performed live at the 1998 Cornerstone Music Festival by A Ragamuffin Band, who then embarked on "The Homeless Man Tour" as a tribute to Mullins' memory. In 1999, Mullins won two Dove Awards posthumously for Songwriter of the Year and the album's lead single "My Deliverer" for Song of the Year awarded to Mitch McVicker who co-wrote it with Mullins and also accepted the award in Mullins' behalf at the 30th GMA Dove Awards. - Songs (1996)
Songs is the official compilation album by Christian singer -songwriter Rich Mullins , released on July 30, 1996 by Reunion Records. It was the last album to be released by Mullins before his death in a car accident on September 19, 1997. The album featured three new recordings: "Sing Your Praise to the Lord" -originally recorded by Mullins' band Zion in 1981 on their album Behold the Man and features the same middle section as on Zion's album, unlike the Amy Grant version where the middle section is omitted from Age to Age . "Elijah" -originally recorded on Mullins' 1986 self-titled debut album . "We Are Not as Strong as We Think We Are" is the lone original track. The song offers a sobering estimation of humanness, set to a beautiful and haunting melody. In addition, the album featured the full-length radio single version of "Screen Door," which had been commercially unavailable prior to this release. Songs peaked at number 10 on the first run of the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart in 1996 and into the spring of 1997, then on October 11, 1997 after Mullins' passing, the album re-entered the chart and climbed to number 7. Mullins also appears on the Billboard 200 Albums chart on the same chart date to debut and peak at number 143. In 1998, Mullins won Artist of the Year posthumously at the 29th GMA Dove Awards In 2001, Songs was certified Gold by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for sales of 500,000 copies, giving Mullins his first and only Gold certified album posthumously. - A Liturgy, A Legacy and a Ragamuffin Band (1993)
A Liturgy, A Legacy and a Ragamuffin Band is the seventh studio album by Christian singer -songwriter Rich Mullins , released on October 26, 1993 by Reunion Records. This album was well received and critically acclaimed. CCM Magazine placed the album in third place in their 2001 book The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music . A Liturgy, A Legacy and a Ragamuffin Band is an example of a concept album, as stated in the liner notes by Mullins and album producer Reed Arvin: "Cuts 2–6 of this album loosely follow the pattern of a liturgy - a tool used for collective worship. In it there is proclamation, praise, confession of sin, affirmation of faith and celebration of grace." "Cuts 7–12 is a consideration of our "secular" heritage (the legacy), issues and ideas that play themselves out in the history of our country." The first track "Here in America" serves as an introduction to the album. Mullins also covers folk rock singer -songwriter Mark Heard's track "How to Grow Up Big and Strong" as a tribute to Heard who passed away in 1992. Mullins also introduced A Ragamuffin Band whose name was inspired by the Christian book The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning. The band consisted of Nashville musicians including Mullins' friend David "Beaker" Strasser, Rick Elias, Jimmy Abegg, Billy Crockett, Phil Maderia and Aaron Strong among others. The album's lead single "Hold Me Jesus" was ranked at number 35 in CCM Magazine 's 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music . In 1994, the song was nominated for two Dove Awards for Song of the Year and Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year. A Liturgy, A Legacy and a Ragamuffin Band climbed to number 6 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. Mullins released a companion video on VHS called Rich Mullins - Pursuit of a Legacy in 1994. Pictures in the Sky is the second studio album by Christian singer -songwriter Rich Mullins , released in 1987 on Reunion Records. An early recording of the song "Screen Door" clocking in at 1:27 appears on this album but a full-length 2:11 radio version would appear on his 1996 compilation album Songs . "Screen Door" became a concert favorite. Mullins wrote the song in Chattanooga, TN on a trip to Knoxville, originally intending to write a limerick. When performing "Screen Door" in concert, Mullins and his band would sing the lyrics and create the song's unique rhythm by hitting plastic cups on a table in a synchronized pattern. In addition to "Screen Door," other songs like "Verge of a Miracle" and the title song did well in Christian radio and climbed up to the Top Ten on the Christian charts. Produced by Reed Arvin.
