More Power to Ya is the fifth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released in 1982 on Star Song Records. This was the first album to feature Louie Weaver as the official drummer. It also features the vocals of bassist Mark Kelly on the song "Disciple." "Stand Up" gave Petra their first Top Ten hit on the Christian Rock chart while the title song peaked at the top of the Christian radio chart and was ranked at number 72 in CCM Magazine 's 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music , while the album ranked at number 98 in the 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music . More Power to Ya peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Top Inspirational Albums chart, produced by Jonathan David Brown. In 2012, More Power to Ya was reissued on CD and digital for its 30 anniversary with three live tracks from their 1986 album Captured in Time and Space . NOTE: on the track "Judas' Kiss," the song's intro includes the phrase "What are you lookin' for the devil for when you oughta be lookin' for the Lord?" and was played backwards. Petra used a technique called "backmasking." According to many people, backmasking was being used in rock music to include hidden satanic messages. This caused a backlash from the Christian community against the genre. In an attempt to divert people obsessed with this from it, Petra used the technique with the intent to send a message. In 2022, More Power to Ya  was reissued and remastered for a limited time on CD (with a collectors trading card), cassette tape and on teal blue vinyl (with a 12 x 18 poster) by Girder Music and Universal Music Group. Not Of This World is the sixth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released in 1983 on Star Song Records. The album was produced and arranged by Jonathan David Brown. It is very similar to its predecessor More Power to Ya , and Bob Hartman has stated that he considers it to be the musical equivalent of a sequel. This album includes some of the group's most popular recordings from the 1980s including the title song, "Grave Rubber," "Not by Sight," "Blinded Eyes" and "Bema Seat." The use of keyboards is featured prominently in this album compared to its predecessor, but not nearly to the level as featured on Beat the System . Petra also made their very first music video for the song "Blinded Eyes." Petra earned their first Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group for Not Of This World . In 1984, Not Of This World peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart for one week, knocking out Amy Grant 's Age to Age album after spending 82 weeks, only to be knocked out by Grant's next album Straight Ahead . Beat the System is the seventh studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released on January 16, 1985 by Star Song Records. The album was produced by Jonathan David Brown. It is the first album to feature John Lawry on keyboards, replacing John Slick after being with the group since 1981. Lawry joined towards the end of the recording process; his contributions were limited to some overdubs on the songs "Beat the System," "Clean" and "Adonai." Most of the keyboards on the album, as well as all the bass and drum parts, were performed by session musician Carl Marsh. Bassist Mark Kelly and drummer Louie Weaver were not involved in the recording, only touring. Fairlight programmer Rhett Lawrence added some elements to "Clean" and "Hollow Eyes." Carl Marsh's programming, under the direction of producer Brown, veered the sound of the album more in the synth-rock genre of music. A music video was made for the title song featuring the new Petra line-up of Greg X. Volz, Bob Hartman, Weaver, Kelly and Lawry. Beat the System peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart, giving the group their second number 1 album. Back to the Street is the eighth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released in the fall of 1986 on Star Song Records. A change in direction for Petra as out is lead vocalist Greg X. Volz and producer Jonathan David Brown and in is new lead singer John Schlitt and new producers John Elefante and his brother Dino Elefante. Also a change in sound as Petra's rock sound is more arena-rock oriented in the vein of Foreigner and Journey. Their previous rock sound was almost more progressive rock like Yes and Styx and in the beginning, southern rock like Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Schlitt was the lead singer of the mainstream rock group Head East and John Elefante was the lead singer of the mainstream rock group Kansas featuring Kerry Livgren. While the sound of the album is rather transitional and unlike anything that would be heard by the group for another seven years, it did mark a movement toward the style that would become Petra's most identifiable sound: prominent keyboards backing up hard-edged guitar tones and raspy, near-screaming vocals. A music video was made for their rock single "Whole World" featuring the new line-up of Schlitt, Bob Hartman, Louie Weaver, Mark Kelly and John Lawry. Back to the Street peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. Petra earned their third Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group and were nominated for three Dove Awards for Artist of the Year, Group of the Year and Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year. This is the first Petra album to be distributed by Sparrow/Star Song Distribution, later renamed Capitol Christian Music Group. Produced by John and Dino Elefante, This Means War! signaled the beginning of a military motif present in the song lyrics that the band would carry through several of their following albums. The album is best known for their long song titles like "Get On Your Knees and Fight Like a Man" and "Don't Let Your Heart be Hardened." On Fire! is the tenth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released in 1988 on Star Song Records. Produced by John and Dino Elefante. This is Petra's final studio album on the Star Song label that they've called home since 1979. This is the first album to feature new bass guitar player Ronny Cates, who replaced Mark Kelly after being with the group since 1981. Cates would remain with Petra until 1995. With his addition to the line-up, the band started their more stable period in terms of line-up. John Schlitt, Bob Hartman, Cates, John Lawry and Louie Weaver would remain together for seven years and six albums. On Fire! 's lyrics continue their theme of spiritual warfare as heard on their 1987 album This Means War! with metaphors making reference to military subtexts like "Mine Field" and "Defector." The band also tackles issues such as homelessness ("Homeless Few") and other personal and social issues. On Fire! peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. Petra was nominated for Group of the Year and Rock Album of the Year for On Fire! at the 20th GMA Dove Awards and in 1990, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group for On Fire! Beyond Belief is the twelfth studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , released on June 20, 1990 by DaySpring/Word Records. The album was produced by John and Dino Elefante. In this album, the band continues to polish their hard rock/arena rock sound the band had been working on in their previous albums, This Means War! , On Fire! and their worship album Petra Praise . As of late 2011, this is the band's most successful album both critically and commercially, and it is considered by most to be the peak of their discography. Beyond Belief is listed at number 71 by CCM Magazine in their 2001 book The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music . In 1991, Petra won accolades starting with this album winning their first Grammy Award for Best Rock/Contemporary Gospel Album after five previous nominations and won Dove Awards for Group of the Year, Rock Album of the Year and the title song winning Rock Recorded Song of the Year. The album cover won a Dove Award for Best Recorded Music Packaging given to Mark Tucker and Buddy Jackson. Beyond Belief topped the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart and in 1995, the album was certified Gold by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for sales of 500,000 copies. Prior to the release of the album, Petra released a short film also called Beyond Belief . The film is produced and directed by Stephen Yake and written by Yake, Tom Newman, Andrea Jobe, and Jeff Bates. Six music video were made: "Creed," "Armed and Dangerous," "Love," "Beyond Belief," Seen and Not Heard" and "I Am On The Rock." The film follows Chad Warren, a young senior in high school, who must face the illness of his brother, David during the summer. While David is diagnosed with cancer, Chad must compete in a huge track and field competition to get a scholarship at Angelo State. David also insists on Chad mending his relationship with their father, who recently walked out on their family. The short film was nominated for a Dove Award for Long Form Music Video. In 2024, Beyond Belief was reissued and remastered for the first time on orange vinyl by Word/Curb Records and Girder Music. Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out is the eleventh studio album by the Christian rock band Petra . The album marks a return to Petra on Word Records after being on the Star Song label for 10 years. Petra recorded on Word's Myrrh label for their first two albums and are now recording on the DaySpring label. This is also their first praise album and is produced by band members Bob Hartman and John Lawry. Petra Praise was released in the fall of 1989 and it was released the same week as Star Song released their rock compilation album Petra Means Rock . The music is mostly a collection of traditional praise songs with a rock style. However, there are two original songs, both written by band founder Bob Hartman. This album also marked the end of custom artwork on Petra albums. From this album forward, Petra would use photos of the band on them for album covers. Compilations by Star Song would continue to use custom artwork though. Commercially it is the second most successful album of the band, after Beyond Belief . Come and Join Us is the second studio album by the Christian rock band Petra , originally released in 1977 by Myrrh/Word Records. The album was produced by Austin Roberts. Come and Join Us continues with a style similar to the one on their previous album, which is something between country and southern rock. However, the music is more rock-oriented, and the lyrics show more depth. Also - like their previous album - there is no lead singer per se. Instead, the lead vocals are handled by guitarists Bob Hartman and Greg Hough and some guest singers. One of the guest singers is future lead singer Greg X. Volz who was featured on two songs. This album would be the final album Petra would record on Word's Myrrh label and Word Records overall. The band would return to the label more than ten years later. Come and Join Us also contains the first recorded cover of "God Gave Rock and Roll to You" as originally performed by the English rock band Argent with additional lyrics not found on the Argent recording in 1971. Petra is the self-titled first studio album by the band Petra , released in 1974 on Myrrh/Word Records. The album was produced by Billy Ray Hearn. The style of the album is southern rock and country rock, influenced by mainstream rock bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eagles and The Doobie Brothers, which was the band's trademark during its first years. The band's debut is more raw than later Petra albums, lacking the refined production values of future releases. It was recorded on a limited budget of $1,000 during the span of two weeks. Nevertheless, this first record displays remarkable guitar technique with many dual guitar solos reminiscent of the Allman Brothers, Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy and other bands from the period who employed harmony leads. Unlike later Petra albums, lead vocal duties are shared by guitarists Bob Hartman and Greg Hough. All That Is Within Me is the sixth studio album by the Christian rock band MercyMe , released on November 20, 2007 by INO Records/Sony Music. The album was produced by Brown Bannister and was recorded at two studios: Cider Mountain Studios in Athol, Idaho and Abbey Road Studios in London, England. All That Is Within Me is described as a contemporary worship album. The album, intended by the band to be a worship album split between covers and original songs, was recorded following the band's tour with Audio Adrenaline in promotion of their previous studio album Coming Up to Breathe . MercyMe wrote so many songs at the studio that they decided not to include any cover songs; all of the songs on the album but one were written by the band. The album was described as being a rock and worship album, being aimed directly at a Christian audience. It is almost in comparison to fellow Christian rockers Third Day's worship album Offerings . All That Is Within Me contained two number one songs: "God With Us" and "You Reign." "You Reign" was written by the band and CCM singer - songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman . Their third single and music video "Finally Home" went Top 5 on the Billboard Christian radio charts and crossed over to mainstream adult contemporary radio climbing to the Top 20. The song was # 1 for 6 weeks on Radio & Records Christian Inspo chart. All That Is Within Me gave MercyMe their third number one album on the Billboard Top Christian Albums and peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 Albums charts. A collector's edition of All That Is Within Me was also released as a CD/DVD combo, with the DVD containing their concert in Hawaii, the "making of the album" segment and a electronic press kit. The CD, in addition to the ten songs, contains three acoustic bonus tracks of "God With Us," "Sanctified" and "Finally Home." The album was MercyMe's fourth Gold certified album by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2010. In 2009 at the 40th GMA Dove Awards, MercyMe was nominated for Group of the Year and Song of the Year for "You Reign." Coming Up to Breathe is the fifth studio album by the Christian rock band MercyMe , released on April 25, 2006 by INO Records/Sony Music. The album was produced by Brown Bannister. The album was recorded at two studios: Allair Studios in New York state and Abbey Road Studios in London. MercyMe wanted to rock out this time around, so they once again worked with Bannister, who produced their 2005 Christmas album The Christmas Sessions and Coming Up to Breathe 's sound is more heavier than in previous releases. Bannister's producing style was different from Pete Kipley's, who had produced their first three albums, Almost There , Spoken For , and Undone ; while Kipley was a hands-on producer, "involved in every part of the song," Bannister would wait until the band had "run down all [their] avenues" before giving input. The band felt Bannister was an "amazing encourager" and were satisfied with the Christmas album Bannister had produced with them; although they felt Kipley did a great job on their previous records, improving themselves as a band and as songwriters, they felt it was "time for a change." The album's lead single and music video, "So Long Self" was an immediate hit topping both Billboard and Radio & Records Christian radio charts. The song even crossed over to mainstream radio where it peaked into the Top 20 on the adult contemporary charts. Their music video for "So Long Self" shows their fun side as opposed to MercyMe being just the band best known for their AC hit ballads "I Can Only Imagine" and "Word of God Speak." Their second single "Hold Fast" was a hit as well on both Christian and mainstream AC charts in 2007. The track "Bring the Rain" features a vocal choir consisting of Mandisa , Anointed (Steve Crawford and Da'dra Crawford Greathouse), Lisa Bevill, Michael Mellet, Fiona Mellet, Abel Orta and Jovaun Woods. It was released as the third single and topped the Christian radio charts. Another track "No More, No Less" also charted, but only made the Top 20 on R&R 's Christian CHR chart.
