  • Behold the Man (1981)

Behold the Man is the one and only studio album by the Christian music band Zion, released independently in 1981. Zion was a part of the Zion Ministries out of Cincinnati Bible College. With some help from relatives, they were able to record this album. It did not have any distribution and was apparently just sold at concerts and in the local Cincinnati, Ohio area. It is Rich Mullins ' first early album with the group that also consists of vocalists Beth Snell, Tom Weimer (also on guitar) and Jenny Filson (also on synthesizer). Mullins wrote all the songs and played piano and dulcimer. Three of the eight songs would be revisited on future albums: "Hope to Carry On" (later recorded on Never Picture Perfect and covered by Caedmon's Call in 1997), "Heaven in His Eyes" (later recorded on The Jesus Record ; first on disc one: The Jesus Demos sung by Mullins and second on disc two: The Jesus Record with lead vocals by Michael W. Smith ) and "Sing Your Praise to the Lord" but listed as "Praise to the Lord" (later recorded on Mullins' 1996 compilation album Songs ). Amy Grant recorded her version in 1981 for her 1982 best seller Age to Age but omitted the middle section. Mullins would record the new recording with the middle section intact from the original recording. After Behold the Man was released, Mullins left the band in pursuit of a solo career as well as songwriting. A YouTube link to listen to the album is posted below this article. • Rich Mullins

Richard Wayne Mullins (October 21, 1955 – September 19, 1997) was an American contemporary Christian music singer and songwriter best known for his worship songs "Awesome God" and "Sometimes By Step." Three of his albums were listed in CCM Magazine 's 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music and "Awesome God " was listed at number one on the 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music . His songs have been recorded by numerous Christian artists and groups like Amy Grant , Michael W. Smith , Rebecca St. James , Caedmon's Call, Carolyn Arends, Jars of Clay, Third Day and Hillsong United. At the time of his death in 1997, Mullins was the most beloved troubadour in CCM and probably came as close to anyone else in the field to being regarded as a "saint." Mullins was famous for his gentle demeanor, his simple lifestyle, his love for children and his overwhelming compassion for the poor. Many of his songs like "Sing Your Praise to the Lord" and "Awesome God" have already become staples in modern hymnody. Mullins had a distinctive talent both as a performer and a songwriter. His compositions showed distinction in two ways: unusual and sometimes striking instrumentation and complex lyrics that usually employed elaborate metaphors. Mullins did most of his composing and performing on piano and acoustic guitar, but he also had a prodigious talent for obscure instruments. He displayed arguably virtuoso skills on the hammered and lap dulcimers and the Irish tin whistle. • The Stand (1980)

The Stand is the fifth solo album by Christian singer - songwriter Chuck Girard . It was originally released on August 1980 by Good News/Word Records. This was Girard's final album on Word Records overall. The Stand was written and recorded during Girard's downslide into the depths of the final stage of his alcohol addiction. Many of the songs were biographical, and reflected his then current struggles. The album was produced by Bob Rose. This was the first album that Girard did not produce. Girard is usual hands on when it comes to production. While Rose produced and mixed the album, Girard was hospitalized for his addiction and went through an intervention. The executives at Word Records did not liked the album's content, because the songs were too sad and controversial especially when it comes to alcoholism, particularly on the title song, "Racin' Like the Wind" and "Child Come Home." The Stand was, in some ways, a head of its time. The album did not perform as well as his previous albums did. Girard wrote all nine songs plus vocalist and songwriter Pat Hollis co-wrote the track "Home For Good." In 2010, The Stand  was reissued digitally on Girard's own label Seven Thunders Records. • DeGarmo & Key

DeGarmo & Key (sometimes nicknamed D&K) was a Christian rock band/duo formed in 1977 by Eddie DeGarmo and Dana Key . The group is notable for having the first Christian rock album nominated for a Grammy award and the first American Christian group to have a video entered into MTV's rotation. They are also noted as being among the first groups to raise the level of technical excellence to match general market releases of the time. While the group played blues based rock with a minor British progressive rock influence, they migrated to a more pop and rock style as time went on. DeGarmo played keyboards and sang background vocals (and occasionally lead), while Key played lead guitar and did the majority of the lead vocals. The other musicians at the time of formation in the late 70s were John Hampton, David Spain, Max Richardson and Terry Moxley (drums) along with Joe Hardy and Ken Porter (bass). Later members included Tommy Cathey on bass, Greg Morrow on drums as well as Tony Pilcher on rhythm and second lead guitar. DeGarmo & Key toured with Amy Grant in 1981 as an opening act and as her backing band (both the band and Grant recorded the duet track "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" from their 1980 album This Ain't Hollywood ). This was Grant's first big tour and was a boost for both artists. Dan Brock, the band's manager and booking agent, explained, "She was the darling of the gospel industry at that time and they were the outcasts. We got a lot of bad press from the gospel establishment people who said they were ruining Amy's music by playing it too loud, but at the time she was drawing a couple thousand people and we were only drawing about 400 or 500, so it gave us a lot of exposure." The concert dates were recorded resulting in Grant's live albums In Concert and In Concert Volume 2 . Some of their more notable hits include: "Destined to Win," "Let the Whole World Sing," "Six, Six, Six," "Boycott Hell," "Every Moment" and "Casual Christian." Both DeGarmo and Key each released solo albums while still recording together as a band. Other musicians who have recorded or toured with DeGarmo & Key include Kenny Porter (bass), Kevin Rodell (drums), Chuck Reynolds (drums), Steve Taylor (guitar) (not related to another Steve Taylor , who is also a contemporary Christian artist) and Mark Pogue (guitar). The group was nominated for seven Grammy Awards and five Dove Awards. DeGarmo and Key disbanded in 1995. DeGarmo was more focused behind the scenes in Christian music as a songwriter, producer and as an executive at his founding label Forefront Records throughout the mid 1990s and 2000s. DeGarmo's niece is singer and Broadway actress Diano DeGarmo, who was an American Idol contestant and runner-up from Season 3 in 2004. In 2021, DeGarmo released his book Rebel for God: Faith, Business and Rock 'n' Roll . Key served as the head of Ardent Records , and hosted a TV show, featuring new, younger, Christian bands. Key had been serving as the pastor of a small church in Cordova, Tennessee called The Love of Christ Church. Key died due to a ruptured blood clot on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at age 56, according to CCM Magazine 's website. The group consisted of Dallas Holm on acoustic guitar and vocals, Tim and Ladonna Johnson on keyboards and vocals, and Randy Adams on bass. Holm's influence has been greatest in contemporary Christian music . While he has had several hit singles in CCM, he is best known for "Rise Again," which is about the resurrection of Jesus . • Live (1977)

Live is a live album by Christian singer - songwriter Dallas Holm . It was released in early 1977 on Greentree/Benson Records. The live project was originally titled Hey, I'm a Believer and it is the first album to feature his backing band known as Praise. On this album, Praise consisted of Tim Johnson (keyboards), Johnson's wife LaDonna (vocals), Randy Adams (bass guitar) and Holm on acoustic guitar and vocals. It was in this live album that he introduced what has become a signature song, "Rise Again." The song, about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, was an instant hit on the Christian radio charts and has been covered by many artists including Holm himself nearly a decade later in his 1988 album Beyond the Curtain . It was tied as the longest charting song on the Christian music chart along with another Easter-themed song "He's Alive" by Don Francisco from 1978 and throughout 1979 for over 100 weeks. The live album was produced by Tim Johnson's brother Phil Johnson and was recorded in Lindale, Texas. It made its first appearance on Billboard 's inaugural Top Inspirational Albums (later renamed Top Christian Albums) chart in March 1980 and debuted at number 9, along with their 1979 release All That Matters . Live peaked at number 7 in July 1980 and was a best seller. In the spring of 1984, Live was the group's only Gold certified album selling more than half a million copies by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). When Live was first released, it was released as Hey, I'm a Believer when it was sold on LP, cassette and 8-track tapes. It was reissued in 1983 as Live...Rise Again with a different album cover design. Then in 1993, it was reissued on CD with the original album cover and was digitally remastered. It also featured "He Knew Me When" as an additional track, whereas the song could not be added on the original 1977 vinyl due to time constraints. In 2006, CCM Magazine named "Rise Again" as one of the 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music and listed it at number 52. In 1978, Holm won Male Vocalist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Mixed Group of the Year with Praise and the top prize for Song of the Year for "Rise Again" at the 10th GMA Dove Awards. Holm also won a special Dove Award for Associate Membership. "Rise Again" was nominated again for Song of the Year but lost to "He's Alive" by Francisco in 1980. • The Name Above All Names (1983)

The Name Above All Names is the sixth studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Chuck Girard . It was released in 1983 on his newly-formed independent label Seven Thunders Records. The label was named after passages from Revelation 10: 1 -7. After the release of his 1980 album The Stand and dropped by Word Records, Girard took some time off from recording music and went through a time in his life that he described as "a time of correction and spiritual renewal," resulting in a commitment to refocus his music ministry on worship leadership. Girard was in a new season of his life after his alcohol addiction. The Name Above All Names was the result. His first album in three years, Girard co-produced it with Bob Rose, who produced his last album The Stand and Girard solely produced the track "Don't Shoot the Wounded." The title song would later be recorded by Debby Boone as the lead single for her 1987 release Friends For Life . This is the first album Girard had ever written that was directly addressing the needs and concerns of the church. His previous albums had been more evangelistic, essentially addressing non-believers, the songs being about one’s need for Jesus or his personal experiences in the Lord. Track listing All songs are written by Chuck Girard. 1. The Name Above All Names -4:38 2. Kingdom Come -4:46 3. We Are the Righteousness of God -3:37 4. Blessed Be the Name of My Rock -3:32 5. • Take It Easy (1979)

Take It Easy is the fourth solo album by Christian singer - songwriter Chuck Girard , originally released on June 10, 1979 by Good News/Word Records. Girard wrote and produced the album himself. According to Girard, Take It Easy was put together from a pool of existing songs and was not intended to be a concept album.  The title was a response to what he perceived to be the overly serious, almost 'task oriented' Christianity he saw emerging around him. Girard says that today's American Christians are largely “taking it easy” from the business of evangelism, soul-winning and other such endeavors, and are largely preoccupied with what they can receive from their Christianity, rather than what they can accomplish for the purposes of the Kingdom of God. The album opens with "Take a Hand," which is probably the best rocking number since "Rock and Roll Preacher," taken from his 1975 debut release . It was also his only track to be released as a single to Christian radio making the Top 20. The track "Full Immersion Ocean Water Baptism By the Sea" is, in some ways, a sequel to the Love Song track "Little County Church," and is about the early Jesus music days when hundreds of young adults would be baptized by Pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel in the ocean at Corona del Mar Beach. It has a "beach-y" feel and kind of reminiscent of Linda Ronstadt's version of "Blue Bayou." "Song For a Christian Wedding" is a song Girard wrote on his wedding day as a gift to his bride Karen when they were married on November 27, 1971. Girard only sang this song to her on their wedding day and, at the time, didn't think that is song would not be on an album, much less Take It Easy. In 2010, Take It Easy  was reissued digitally on Girard's own label Seven Thunders Records. Track listing All songs are written by Chuck Girard. 1. Take a Hand -3:23 2. Love Is Alive -3:09 3.
