  • Brand New (1987)

Patillo returns to music after a year and a half away, after the release of Love Around the World and his comedy album A Funny Thing Happened... . This was the last of Patillo's period albums of the 1980s. Brand New also has an updated sound, particularly on the upbeat title track, "I'm Brand New." The slowed-down ballad "Isn't It Crazy" was written by fellow CCM musician and songwriter Tim Miner. Both of the above-mentioned tracks were his final Top 10 hits on Christian radio. A Funny Thing Happened...Classic Comedy & Liveable Lessons is comedy/spoken word album by Christian singer - songwriter Leon Patillo , released by Myrrh/ Word Records. It was released around May of 1986, just a few months after Patillo's vocal album Love Around the World . Patillo wrote in the liner notes on the vinyl's back album cover: "As I travel across the country singing and performing I generally take time to share a Biblical story (paraphrased of course!) People have often asked where they might find these stories on tape. So with your great encouragement, I have compiled this album. I hope it will help turn your mourning into laughter and cause your days to be filled with joy to the Lord. I've always thought my contribution to the world would be of a more serious nature, but I guess A Funny Thing Happened..." This was Patillo's only album to be released containing no new music. Just material of spoken word with comedic elements. It was recorded live in concert across the United States. Patillo even thanked Christian comedian Mike Warnke for his inspiration. Patillo wrote the material and produced the album. A Funny Thing Happened... did not chart and is currently out of print. It is not available for digital streaming or for purchasing. • Love Around the World (1985)

Love Around the World is the fifth solo album by Christian singer - songwriter Leon Patillo , released on November 14, 1985 by Myrrh/Word Records. Patillo produced the album himself with George Duke as executive producer on five tracks. Duke is best known as an American R&B musician and producer, who produced Deniece Williams ' number one 1984 hit "Let's Hear It For the Boy." Patillo's popularity in Christian and gospel music started to decline with this release. He was at his peak when his previous album, The Sky's the Limit , was Grammy and Dove nominated. Despite that, Patillo still managed a number one song on the Christian AC chart with its lead single "One Thing Leads to Another." The title song was also a Top 10 hit and a music video. American actor Gavin McCleod (TV's The Love Boat and The Mary Tyler Moore Show ) provided narration on the track "Up and Over." Patillo also does a cover of the the gospel standard "The Lord's Prayer" as the final track. Patillo plays all instruments on the album with some studio musicians added on some of the tracks. Love Around the World peaked at number 7 by spring of 1986 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. NOTE: in a unique marketing tool reminiscent of Phil Keaggy 's 1980 album Ph'lip Side , Love Around the World is presented with two covers. For its digital version, Patillo wearing a jacket is the current front album cover, where as the original front album cover is Patillo wearing a shirt. Each cover shows the five tracks on the lower bottom in small print and shows Patillo as producer one side and Duke as executive producer on the other. • Deniece Williams

June Deniece Williams (née Chandler ; born June 3, 1951) is an American R&B singer. She has been described as "one of the great soul voices" by the BBC. She is best known for the songs "Free," "It's Gonna Take a Miracle," "Silly" and two Billboard number one hits "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" (with Johnny Mathis) and "Let's Hear It For The Boy" (from the motion picture Footloose ) in the 1970s and 1980s. Williams and Mathis are also best known for singing the 1980s television theme song from Family Ties called "Without Us." At the start of her career in 1976, Williams would include one gospel song on each of her mainstream albums. It was in 1980 that her musical career path began to change favoring Gospel music. Williams joined with friends Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind and Fire, Leon Patillo and Syreeta Wright to present a Gospel show at The Roxy, a popular club in Los Angeles, California called "Jesus at the Roxy." In 1985, at the 27th Grammy Awards, Williams performed her 1977 composition "God Is Amazing" rather than her number one hit "Let's Hear It For The Boy," much to her record company's disdain. In 1986, Williams formed her own production company, Gateway Music, and married her business partner Brad Westering (it was her third marriage, and she had already raised her two sons from her first marriage as a single mother). Their marriage would last until the early 1990s when they divorced. That same year she moved overtly into Christian music and would release two albums for Sparrow Records: So Glad I Know (1986) and Special Love (1989). Like Philip Bailey, Donna Summer, B.J. Thomas and other Christian performers who did not renounce their ties to secular music, Williams continued to be criticized by conservative Christians for continuing to record for the general market at the same time she was making albums for the CCM market. Williams said at one point: "There are people in the church who will tell you to quit driving the city bus and start driving a Sunday School bus, but our responsibility is to seek God where He has us." Williams, in a January 1987 cover story of CCM Magazine , said at the time "I really don't think that I'm living in two separate worlds or that my Columbia (her secular label) and Sparrow (her Christian label) albums say two different things." Williams would later say "I know that there are a lot of Christians that don't understand what I do or what Amy Grant does, but I've got one judge and He doesn't look anything like them." From the Beginning is a Gospel compilation album by American R&B singer Deniece Williams , released in late 1990 on Sparrow Records. It is a collection of gospel songs Williams had recorded during her years at Columbia Records. The album also contains a live performance of "God Is Amazing" from the 27th Grammy Awards in 1985, originally from her 1977 album Song Bird . A cover of Michael W. Smith 's "I Am Sure" was released as the first single to Christian radio stations. From the Beginning  debuted and peaked at number 35 on the Billboard  Top Christian Albums chart in early 1991. Even though it was released as a compilation album of previously released material, Williams earned two Dove Award nominations in 1992 for Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year and Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song of the Year for the track "I Am Sure." • Special Love (1989)

Special Love is the thirteenth studio and second full-length Gospel album by American R&B singer Deniece Williams . It was released on June 15, 1989 and is the first and only album on MCA Records for the mainstream market and Sparrow Records for the Christian market. Williams re-recorded the song "Healing" from her 1986 album Hot on the Trail and was the lead single to Christian radio. The second single "Every Moment" was released to both mainstream R&B and Christian radio stations accompanied by a music video. The song did well on the Christian radio charts and only climbed to number 55 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart. In 1990, Williams was nominated for two Grammy Awards for the songs from Special Love : Best Gospel Performance, Female for "Healing" and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group for "We Sing Praises," a duet with fellow American R&B singer and Williams' friend Natalie Cole. Special Love peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart.
